Quinta São Luiz The Vine House Douro

What a fantastic place to spend a few days in the Douro. The tour (included for guests) was brilliant and informative. We sampled a lot of the products and all were superb! The chef at the restaurant is so skillful. The staff were incredible, offering help, advice and knowledge. The room (with balcony) is one of the best we have ever stayed in.

There is absolutely nothing that we found that was a negative.

Great room, good size with large terrace looking over the spectacular Duoro River. Very helpful staff. Lovely pool and excellent breakfast though I would have liked to have sat outside. This did not seem to be an option. Great tour of the vineyard included in the stay. Beautiful location.

No pool service ( food and drinks) and a strange system where the staff appear every hour or so to deliver phone orders, no good if you want immediate service without waiting ages. I ended up walking up the hill to the restaurant and waiting for my drink and then carrying it down myself. Restaurant food was not quite up to the Duoro Valley standards though the staff were very friendly and helpful. I realise this is a seperate business, I'd suggest they improve their menu and food quality. It was also very expensive compared to other much better restaurants in the area.

Peaceful, relaxing, amazing views, the rooms were new and very clean. Free wine in the room. Amazing staff. The restaurant was great as well! And wine tasting from Kopke was good

The pool here is stunning - I've never been in a pool with such incredible views. The water was so refreshing in the heat of the valley. Also liked the complementary tour of the on-site winery, with good tastings. The room was good, and the views from the balcony are terrific.

Dinner - the setting, the price (55 Euros a head, before drinks), the dish descriptions from the waiter, the show of wearing gloves and pouring your main dish - would get you thinking you're going to have an exceptional dinner. But what we got was the exact opposite - tasteless food, and in the case of the Octopus dish - with a presentation which was insulting. This was easily the worst dinner we had in Portugal, and a direct contrast to absolutely fantastic meals we had in our 2 previous nights in Dajas Douro Valley, as a comparison. I hate writing bad reviews, but this one is due. Breakfast was not better, sorry to say. The scrambled eggs had that "I've been here for a while" crust on them, and the overall look and feel had nothing to do with what you'd expect from a hotel which charges premium prices. Considering the fact that most people coming to hotels like this prefer eating on-location, the dinning experience is something to think about.
