DISCLAIMER - The following negative review is NOT related to the lodge. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with the business & the accommodation that they provide,, this is just something that everyone who plans on visiting Sigiriya should know & be aware off. Again, this has nothing to do with the Gangula Eco Lodge or my experience there. In the middle of town, across the road from the ATM & the BARISTA cafe are two captive elephants. The people who own these elephants use them to entertain & profit of tourists - letting people ride them, bathe them, pet them & take photos with them - all for a fee of course. PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT OR CONDONE THIS. These elephants are abused & show clear signs of distress, they are chained up & left on the side of the road for people to gawk at until the next customer arrives. It is common & public knowledge that it is extremely unethical & barbaric for elephants to live in these conditions. There are still no laws or regulations in place to protect captive elephants in Asia so tourists & travelers need to do their part by being aware & knowledgeable of the mistreatment these animals have to endure as well as not supporting the people & organizations who profit of it. Please do your research before visiting sanctuaries, orphanages or any organizations that claim to care for elephants, as they can be quite deceiving with their marketing & advertisements - if they’re legitimate & truly care for the elephants wellbeing then there is absolutely no way that you can pay to have a close up encounter with one. If you plan to pay for or partake in an any sort of personal encounter with an elephant, whether that be in Sri Lanka or anywhere else in Asia, just know that you are directly funding an industry that profits of the neglect, abuse & suffering of these animals & will continue to do so until they can’t anymore.

A mouse ate a piece of my bag in the night while I was sleeping. The noise woke me up but didn't see the mouse. In the morning I found my bag chewed by the mouse.
