Would not return- owners arbitrarily used a cash deposit to pay for cleaning that was not discussed.
We enjoyed the quiet suburban location as well as the strong a/c which is necessary for visiting in the middle of the summer. The apartment was as described and the owners offered to let us park in their driveway.
We did not realize that the owners ask for a 500 euro deposit (in cash) to stay in their cottage. This is buried far down on the reservation. We were asked to pay this amount after we asked about parking, and we were under the impression that we were paying a separate deposit in case we damaged the owners' driveway/property wall with our large SUV. We paid them 300 euro and notified the owners that we were to leave about 6am on Saturday morning, so we kindly asked for them to return our deposit Friday evening and that we would park on the street overnight to make sure all was fine. The owners messaged and said that they would be home late, so we asked them to leave the deposit out side the door for us to pick up when we left and we would return the key. They did not respond to this request, and in fact lied about returning at all. Sure enough, we awoke at 6am to leave, they had not returned home, and were still holding our cash. We had no receipt and no way of knowing whether they would keep it and deny us having ever given it to them in the first place (such is the worry of many traveling in Europe). They refused to respond to our messages for the next 48 hours. Finally they responded and said that we had left the floor of the shower very dirty, stained two bath towels, and left two marks on the walls and they would be keeping some of the deposit. I told the owner that this is not our problem as cleaning was not meant to be an extra charge. I also said that there were 4 adults going to the beach daily and we had to wash our feet in the shower, so there is no surprise that it was not sparkling clean. Moreover, there were no cleaning products in the house to speak of. To this, the owner said that we could have easily gone to the store to purchase some! SO be prepared to buy cleaning products for the cottage and not having the owner pay you for them! Forget about hanging up a towel inside to dry, but don't hang it on the railing.
