The location is very good and the house is superb - everything you can think of is there. The hosts are very friendly - Jackie was there to welcome us. Whenever I had a question, I texted Dave and he always answered practically immediately. The house has some great features, such as 'slow cooking' stove (but also electrical / microwave if it needs to go faster), an outside bath with seaview (and privacy) that is just the best I've ever been in.
Nothing. Only a minor thing that probably other people don't mind: When we entered, all the rooms were scented with artificial air fresheners - that was a bit too much for us, but fortunately all we needed to do was switch them all off (electronically) and open the windows.

Backaskaill Farmhouse was the best holiday home we ever stayed. Its interior was impeccably designed, with every detail thoughtfully considered to create a harmonious and inviting atmosphere. One highlight was the private beach, where we could bask in the sun and enjoy the beauty of the coastline and the local wildlife of Sanday. To top it all off, the kind and attentive host made our stay even more delightful by helping us with everything and welcoming us with coffee, cake, fresh flowers and treats for our dog.

Amazing location: great sandy beach you just leave the house to walk or play or be on. Very comfortable, lovely to have house slippers provided, bath sheets and gowns, and the welcome basket of fruit and baking much appreciated. Words can’t do the house justice, but would definitely return if we could, thank you for the hospitality. Very well thought out planning to enable everyone in our family of two parents and three teenagers to enjoy being outdoors but then return to such a cosy place without fear of sand, wet or general mess destroying the lovely interior.
Nothing.

Stunning location a stone’s throw from the beach. The cottage is clean with plenty of socialising/eating space and has everything you could need for a self catering stay. We loved the very generous welcome hamper including fresh homemade pastries, thank you Jackie for making us so welcome!

Self catering but an ordered hot meal left in the range for our arrival. Very generous welcome pack. Centred in a working farm the location was very dog friendly with fenced garden areas front and back . The deserted white sand beach was only 100 yds distance and local lobster and crabs supplied from local Wee Willy. The island of Sanday perfect for a desert island short stay.
Nothing not to like.

Jackie meet us from the ferry and took our luggage while we cycled to the property. When we got to the accommodation there was freshly baked croissants and coffee waiting for us.

Backaskaill Cottage was delightful it had everything Poppy (my Jack Russell terrier) and I needed for a very enjoyable stay on Sanday. Nothing was too much trouble and though on a working farm the beach was on the doorstep giving Poppy plenty of space to run free.
The weather, the wind was biting cold but it didn't stop us going out and about, Sanday is a beautiful little island.

Everything was super. Really. Jackie couldn’t have been a more accommodating host. The kitchen was really well stocked (we had come with everything and the kitchen sink - we didn’t need to!) There we’re little touches that we’re very welcome after the days journey there. Our boys eyes lit up when they saw the pastries on arrival. The dressing gowns and slippers an added treat. The gorgeous (just about private) beach was 50 steps away. There were fulmars nesting in the cliffs, terns flying overhead, seals watching us as we walked along the shore. The sun was shining every day, but if the wind blew we had the summerhouse to use. We stayed 3 nights and could so easily have stayed a week or more. I hope we go back.
The island has so many miles of beaches and coastal walks. We saw short eared owls in the early eve over the farmland. Many seabirds and seals. A really special place to stay.

We adored this little farmhouse that was a stone’s throw away from the beach immediately. The island is quiet with plenty of beaches to discover. Who knew having nothing to do would be so fun!?
Jackie gave us the warmest welcome and the house was super well stocked with all sorts of thoughtful finishes, from picnic baskets, to doggy bits and lots of yummy nibbles. We felt utterly spoilt!
The whole house is created with comfort and homeliness in mind. We felt right at home from the moment we arrived.
The lounge upstairs was a wonderful spot to sit and read by the fire and I fell in love with the old style kitchen.
We stayed for 3 nights, but that was not nearly enough!! So we’re already planning our next trip back!
The house book has lots of lovely suggestions - I would recommend reading this ahead of time and booking in any things you want to see or do in advance as island life moves slowly. And remember to wave to all the locals.
Cannot recommend this hidden gem enough - worth the trek!!!!
Absolutely nothing, we loved this spot!

Very well appointed, nice furnishings, comfortable bed. Everything was very clean and homely.
There was a fresh pot of coffee and pastries waiting for my arrival, and even a quiche in the oven.
That’s hospitality done right!
Jackie was a wonderful host, and the people on the island, just lovely! It’s my first ever trip to the Orkneys and it was well worth taking the trip over to Sanday. It’s my new favourite. I’ll definitely be booking again.
There wasn’t anything I didn’t like. If I was to niggle, the tv (sky box) kept going off. However I was there to escape the world and read books, so even that was a positive! No distractions.
