A Christmas stay with no heating or hot water for four days

We stayed from 23–30 December. On arrival, the property had no heating and no hot water. This situation continued for four days, during which time the ensuite shower was unusable, and there was no usable hot water at all (other than boiling a kettle). This was over the Christmas period during a particularly cold snap, and tradespeople and the owner were attending the property repeatedly, causing further disruption. Heating and hot water were only fully restored after four days. While the owner did provide some temporary electric heaters, the lack of both heating and hot water for such a significant part of the stay meant the property was not fit for purpose for a large portion of our holiday. The owner acknowledged the issue and said compensation would be provided, but several weeks later, the dispute remains unresolved. The property itself may be nice when fully functional, but based on our experience and the way the issue has been handled, I would not stay again or recommend it.

Amazingly comfortable

Merewood House was exceptional. As a family that prefers to stay in charge of our dietary needs due to allergies and who have travelled all over the world, we always prefer self catering accommodation but we have never seen a more equipped house than Merewood. The kitchen was fully equipped. Everything needed for home cooking and eating was thought of and available. With enough crockery for the whole family. The bedrooms were clean, spacious and comfortable. The living room was large and well furnished for everyone to sit comfortably and watch TV or just relax. With fast internet broadband speed to top it off. It was indeed a home away from home.

A relaxing stay in this bright and comfortable home-from-home.

Our second time staying at this wonderful home-from-home. The previous stay was a cosy winter one, so it was a real treat to enjoy a summer trip this time with the beautiful garden with so many options of places to sit and relax. The house was immaculate on arrival and lovely surprises like fresh milk waiting for us along with tea, coffee & biscuits. A treat to have starter pack of washing up / dishwasher bits, as well as plenty of shower gel, soap and toilet roll. The house is well equipped, very spacious especially for the living areas and kitchen, and lovely home touches. We had a very comfortable stay and will certainly be back when visiting family and friends in the area. Thank Nick for being such a great host!

The bedroom shutter style blinds let in quite a bit of light (especially on long summer evenings) so light sleepers might want to pack an eye mask if that bothers them.

Perfect location to visit Oxford, London and the surrounding areas.

I liked the house, it had everything we needed for a week's stay. We had fantastic weather so we were never couped up in the house. The property had a garden with a table and chairs so when we came in we spent time outdoors. The television had Netflix so that was a great plus. The driver I'm our group loved that we had a drive so no hassle parking.

I do hate to give negative feedback but when we walked into the house we were all stunned by the house as it looked amazing, really big with a lovely view into the garden from the kitchen but on closer inspection once we were unpacked and settled in we found the cleanliness to be a bit lacking. The bedrooms were fine and beds very comfortable but downstairs they have glass doors which were really dirty, there is a lamp in the lounge which is covered in dust and when we put it on it smelt awful. The garden was a lovely addition however it was advertised with a lovely sun room but wasn't usable. It was a rickety shed full of cobwebs and not set up for use as the pictures on the website suggested. It had a barbecue that had a previous guest remains still in there. We would have used the barbecue as the weather was amazing but I'm on holiday and not prepared to clean up someone else's rubbish. On the whole a lovely house and the plusses outweighed the negatives, however if the weather had of been bad the story.might have been different.

Great house a short bus ride away from Oxford

Hi Nick Thanks for the stay. As you can see by my score we were really pleased with the location and cleanliness of the house. We appreciated the dishwasher tablets etc and the take away food leaflets which we took full advantage of on the first night. A couple of things I think are worth mentioning. The shower in the main bathroom was difficult to get right and the high temperature was even too much for my husband who likes it hot! I think that there is a real possibility that the person using the shower could be scolded. The only other things were that a couple of the drawers had a few bits of fluff etc which could easily be eliminated by a quick vacuum. I might have just missed it but I don't remember mention of the hairdryers in the list of facilities. The last two points are just a bit picky and in no way spoilt our stay. We would certainly come again and recommend you to our friends and families. Best wishes. Marion Blythe

The gazebo was wonderful. We had breakfast on the patio. There's a large rosemary plant. I used it to cook. . The house was very clean. It was recently remodeled. There was a television in the kitchen and the living room. We will be there next year.

Great Weekend

The house was really comfortable and warm. Everything you needed was available. The drive was big enough for 2 cars. The beds were comfortable and soft. The summer house had evening sun on it so great for gin & tonic sundowner. The house was well layed out. The location to park and ride was perfect. Very quiet neighbourhood. Will definitely book again and happy to recommend. There were two couples staying and the 2 bathrooms plus downstairs toilet was great.

Only some constructive feedback. The walk in shower needed a basket on the shower rail to hold toiletries. We had person with bad back who couldn't bend so was awkward to reach shampoo etc. There were not side lamps or tables by both sides of the bed in two bedrooms which was needed.

We were 7 adults. Carol came with extra towels and bedsheets. We felt home. Everything was perfect and clean. Three toilets and two bathrooms. The place is so close to Thornhill Park & Ride if you need to use public transport. The apartment is new renovated. Really nice. It looks even much better in reality. A real home from home. Well furnished and the extra touches, such as the blankets so we could sit out in the summer house on an October evening, were much appreciated. The location is superb - a quiet street, but within walking distance of the Park and Ride, so great access to Oxford city centre.

The only issue was the beds were comfortable, but a little creaky when turning over in the night. A very minor issue, though.

Really Good

We had 3 nights here and the home was lovely and clean with everything you needed. The bed in the main room was a bit small, having the ensuite was great. One of the other bedrooms was quite small that it was difficult to work out of a suitcase. The kitchen and lounge area was large and nice to relax in, plus there was a lovely backyard with a summer house if you wanted to use that. Location was good too - we drove to the bus terminal which was 5 mins away and got the bus into Oxford to do the usual exploring. Parking was right outside the front door.

Just the size of the main bed could be bigger as that room would take it.

Unforgettable!

This really is a treat which deserves every praise it gets. Very comfortable, splendid kitchen and living area, very good beds and en suite facilities for the master bedroom, spacious bathroom... all in a very quiet neighbourhood close to the park-and-ride and even to Oxford. This is a perfect place to stay with the family!

No general house information/instructions particularly re rubbish and recycling, no food waste bin in kitchen. Problem with pop up plugs in en-suite and bathroom. Could do with more cutlery. Mugs very thick and heavy.

Very comfortable for my stay with my two sisters, having a room each. Bathroom facilities were great plus a third toilet. Very close to Park and Ride, so easy to get about.

It would have been good if there was a local shop or pub. Everything was excellent in the house apart from the shower in the family bathroom, not much room to move and not a very powerful shower
