The Veteran Hotel & Bar

When writing this review there's a host of options about how you arrived and I said I by plane. I actually walked down the pier with a large case on wheels. It was a beautiful day and I recommend it to anyone who can. All the other options for arriving are possible and if you want to be pedantic, yes the hovercraft is actually a flight so could be classed as arriving by plane but for transport connections to the mainland and round the island? They are right there. Literally in the time it took you to read the above you could have walked to them! I chose this hotel not just because of the location I also admire the fact it is a hotel that was set up to help veterans. Now, I'm not and you don't have to be a veteran to stay here - I would recommend the bar and especially the decor in there if you have any interest in the Navy and even if you don't, have a look! The room was for just myself, it was great and as advertised with a great sea view. Tea and coffee facilities in the room, along with bottled water.

There is no lift at the property. It's an old building so I didn't expect there to be one so if you're arriving with a really large/heavy case like me or have mobility issues then consider that and perhaps ask the hotel before booking for the best option. There's two other things that I didn't mind but you might want to think about... 1. No air-con. There was a fan and the window opened for fresh air and when the country is not struggling through a heatwave they would be fine. I slept ok though so not an issue for me. 2. The transport interchange/hovercraft and Esplanade are right there and so are the associated noises from the train or kids waiting for the bus or the hovercraft... It wasn't noticeable when I stayed but if you need total silence then bring earplugs!

Loud music till 12:30am and loud karaoke but was slightly expected. Was woken up by a random person followed by police banging on our door at 04:20 looking for the manager which wasnt great.
