A cosy home from home
A home from home, very comfortable with everything we needed. Well supplied for those wood burner making it a cosy relaxing location to hang out with friends and explore the local area. There were some beautiful, easy to access local walks for days when we didn’t want to travel. Everything we needed.

Take your own bedding/pillows, induction cookware, cafetiere, washing up gloves, toilet paper.
Great location. Quiet & secluded. Initial impression on entering property is great (until you go upstairs). Nice wood floors and well appointed (until you look in the kitchen cupboards for cook ware). Nice neighbours. This place could be turned into a fantastic Spa quality hidden gem with just a few tweaks.
ALL the saucepans are made of poisonous Teflon, and all of them were old and scratched so we could not use them to cook with except to boil an egg. Even that was a challenge because it's an induction stove but the small egg saucepan did NOT have a flat bottom, and it took us ages to work out what the problem was. There were NO dedicated containers or covers for the microwave, so we could not use that either. The selection of ovenproof containers to heat/cook food were very poor, so that was also a juggling act to heat food. No cafetiere or coffee pod machine, so it was "instant" coffee or nothing. The bedding was the most awful cheap selection of drab dowdy 'old old old' poly-cotton that made it feel like you were staying in someone's home in the back room that was reserved for granny. The bedding and bath towels could not be hot washed, and they reflected this because they were 'grey'. The duvets were 'very' heavy, and the pillows were solid. There was no dishwasher, which in itself is fine, but then the washing up gloves had holes in them so we could not use proper hot water, and there was NO washing up brush supplied, just one blue jay cloth! There was only ONE bin liner, so after fish pie on the first evening it was smelly, but there was no option to change the liner. We stayed 4 nights and there was only 'just' enough toilet paper to go around (we had to ration it on the last morning). The key safe at the front door was easy enough to open, except the innards then just fell out, and it was impossible to get them back in. It is old and needs replacing. You need to change the bedding to crisp white sheets, a lighter weight duvet with a blanket if needed. Decent pillows. White towels that can be hot washed. A selection of stainless steel saucepans, and a proper variety of oven proof cookware, and a cover for the microwave. And a cafetiere if you don't want to supply a pod machine.

Peaceful retreat with fantastic walks on the doorstep.
A quiet location with friendly neighbours.
Garden not as private as we would have liked. Strange looking into neighbours garden from the kitchen

Lovely area, nice place, pity about the vacuum cleaner.
The cottage is one of a pretty little terrace, close to the lovely River Wear in the pretty village of Westgate. Wonderful views when travelling across the moors, North and South. It must be the tiniest two bedroom cottage possible, with back gardens sideways displaced. It has been beautifully "done up" with quality joinery and with hard floors downstairs - ideal for dog guests. The TV and Wifi worked well and the bed was very comfortable. The wood stove, with a supply of logs, and the electric radiators kept the house generally warm. The rental was much cheaper than other nearby cottages. Impeccably clean.
Small, cheap changes would improve the customer experience. When we arrived the house was cold - a bad first impression, particularly in February. A quick reference guidance sheet would have been useful on how to operate the house - recycling, bin day, radiators, Wifi code etc. If it existed, we didn't find it. We only managed to get tepid water from the kitchen taps and shower, and the towel rail in the bathroom didn't work requiring a fan heater to be pointed through the open door from the landing power point during a shower. The pre-arrival information could have included that there was an identified parking place: arriving in the dark, a neighbour came to tell us, in a kindly way, where to park. The very worst thing about staying at No2 West Haswicks, though, was the vacuum cleaner which was the flashiest, largest, heaviest, most inconvenient vacuum cleaner ever. It must have been designed by a Texan! When I was at school, we were taught that "nature abhors a vacuum". It must have been this one. If you plan to stay at No2, bring your own hoover!!
