Excellent stay - definitely recommend

Really great stay! The location was very good, facilities fine (good storage for ski gear, lovely sauna area with 2 saunas and relaxation room), the breakfast was excellent (wide variety, great quality) and the staff excellent - very friendly, helpful - it was lovely to meet so many nice people! Room was warm, well serviced daily, enough storage. We didn't take the half board, but did have dinner in the restaurant, which was also good

Location, comfort but most of all superb service.

The hotel is ideally placed in the centre of Zell am See. It is a comfortable, modern and welcoming hotel. The helpful staff were off scale. Iona, Denisa and Magdelana on Reception were super helpful with my many enquiries before our arrival - sorting us out with free public transport from Salzburg Airport, ski hire and meals despite our delayed arrival. I can’t praise the staff highly enough - the Reception staff and Anna in the restaurant/breakfast area. I would this recommend the hotel to anyone.

Comfortable home from home in the mountains!

We love staying here, the room is super comfortable, the location in the village is great. The breakfast selection is fabulous, with something for everyone. The staff are warm and welcoming, we have stayed here many times and it always delivers!

Definitely worth your money&food was delicious

The location was excellent and they had a garage to park, which is €15 a night but basically unlimited throughout the day even after checkout.

Unfortunately, there was a strand of hair between the sheets which did not belong to me. The balcony windows were not soundproof so I could hear everything outside, which was a bit annoying.

The stay was mostly pleasant, though customer service at reception was inconsistent.

The hotel itself was nice, and most of the staff were friendly and professional. The location and overall comfort met expectations.

One receptionist had a very negative impact on our stay. When we asked a simple question about how the ski lifts and mountain access work (we are not experienced skiers), we were dismissed with “you’ll see when you get there” and a vague gesture toward a selection of maps and flyers. No explanation or assistance was offered, which felt unhelpful and condescending. We also discovered a towel in our room with visible burn marks. We immediately brought it to reception to avoid any misunderstanding. Instead of handling this professionally, the same receptionist told us to take the towel back to the room and leave it on the floor, requiring us to go back upstairs before we could leave the hotel. This felt unnecessary and inappropriate for a hotel in this price range. To make matters worse, he then followed us to explain how the “Do Not Disturb / Clean My Room” sign works, despite us clearly understanding it. It felt patronising and as though he was not listening to the actual issue we raised. When his behaviour was described as rude, he claimed not to understand and began explaining personal medical issues. While that may be unfortunate, guests should not be subjected to excuses or attitude. We paid a lot to stay here and expected basic professionalism and courtesy. It’s unfortunate, as all other staff members we encountered were pleasant. Management should address this issue, as one employee significantly affected our experience.

The reception closed at 21:00 hours and it was not possible to stay in the lobby after this time. This was very annoying.

Great hotel in the centre of Zell am See

Perfect location in the centre of Zell am See. Several restaurants and bars, the lake, the town square, shops, cable car (CityXpress) are all within walking distance. Nicely refurbished hotel both inside and outside. Comfortable room with spacious bathroom. Everything is kept in great condition and clean. Spacious breakfast area, well organised with plenty of choices.

Cosy, homely and luxurious

Extremely homely, cosy and warm. The staff were extremely helpful and kind. The hotel was quiet. Breakfast was delicious and staff were friendly and happy. Dinner at restaurant was great. The bedrooms were incredible as well as balcony. The bathroom was large with a separate shower and toilet with large bath. Sauna in basement is a must more like a spa.

Trust me, you want to stay here

Everything!! From the moment we walked into the beautiful lobby we were greeted with a smile. When we entered our room we noticed it did not match the description of the room I had booked. That is because they upgraded our room to a suite!! What an unexpected and wonderful surprise. The location was perfect and everything looked brand new and spotless. Gruner Baum is a 10 out of 10

A disappointing stay, after many visits over 40 years and stays in other Zell am See hotels

The location was excellent and the hotel had high standards of comfort and cleanliness

We did not know that the hotel was working with reduced hours because of the seasonal break in Zell am See. On arrival at check in at 20.30 we were informed of this and advised that for every night food was only available at one of the few restaurants open in the town. Thus, for each night of our stay we had to search for a restaurant that was open (not easy), including buying sandwiches from a supermarket, in desperation! It was only at check out that we learned that the hotel restaurant had been open in the evening all of the week. Poor communication, to say the least! Reception staff stayed behind the check in desk in a separate room - attracting their attention was sometimes difficult as their eyes were below their computer screen. Some times in this situation a question was clearly a nuisance.

Worst hotel in a long time.

Location right in the center of the old town. Parking next to the hotel. Breakfast was good.

I was given the worst room in the hotel and it wasn’t full. It looked out on a fire escape and was right above a bar so noisy till 1 am. The next day I saw a small sign on the window that earplugs were available from the front desk. Luckily I was there only 1 night.

It was my first stay at Hotel Gruner Baum ....I have been in Zell am See many times before but never had a chance to book my stay here. It was a great choice and I really enjoyed it. Perfect location in heart of Zell am See. Really great breakfast and dinner. Close to ski resorts....

Comfortable, great for our needs, I'd probably expect a little more from a 4 star hotel.

Very spacious and comfortable room and bathroom, great location, really nice breakfast. Dinner at the restaurant was lovely and the staff really friendly and accommodating.

The bathroom sliding door didn't offer a huge amount of privacy. The staff in the breakfast and a la carte restaurants were really friendly, but found a couple of the receptionists to be a bit unhelpful and rude. One lady seemed very inconvenienced every time I came up to ask a question, and another was unwilling to call the hotel restaurant to make a booking for me, and told me to go and speak to them myself (just as I stood there in my socks and in all my ski gear). Not a problem to pop across the road, but not a response I expected!

Excellent value for money hotel but location may be a factor depending on your priority.

Nice hotel. Friendly & helpful staff in all departments, 10 min walk to City Express ski lift, comfortable room & size for single occupancy, good bar area at reasonable prices, nice breakfast. Great location for centre of town and nightlife, particularly if you like to party hard (or are a heavy sleeper and unaffected by nearby 'boom boom' bar !).

From the building and room allocated it could get very noisy from a nearby nightclub from approx 10pm - 4 am each night - not the fault of the hotel, but something to bear in mind when deciding location if getting a good night sleep is important to you after a hard days skiing to be ready for the next day. The double glazed windows did help when shut but were unable to completely prevent the volume of the music or its clientele when singing outside in the street ! Accepted, not the fault of and beyond the hotels ability to do much about this, but although I like to have an occasional late night on my skiing holiday I would be looking to stay in a quieter part of town if I visit the resort again because of this one factor as it was almost every night and definitely had an impact by the end of the week.

Ideal location in an ideal ski resort.

Great location in center of town. Short walk to CitiExpress gondola. Excellent breakfast with all necessary ingredients to provide fuel for a good day on the slopes. Single room on top floor was just fine and the bed was firm and comfortable. Would definitely stay here again.
