I had a wonderful stay at Grandma guesthouse. Stayed for 3 nights, went on a multi day trek and then returned for one more night. My return felt like coming home. Yusuf and his family are very warm and welcoming, and will go above and beyond to make you comfortable. Organising the trekking and onward travel with Yusuf was super easy and very well organised. He also has a school for underprivileged children, which I went to visit and helped to teach English and played badminton with them. The girls also practise traditional dancing in the Warung connected to the guesthouse (which serves really cheap and tasty local food), so by staying here you will experience more than just the jungle, but also get an insight into the local community. A great experience that I’ll never forget. Thank you Yusuf and family!

Yusuf, the owner, is a very nice person. Very welcoming, always there for you, and he even drove me 10km to the next ATM! He always makes sure you are okay. I booked my 2-day jungle tour directly via him one day before and it was amazing. You can also eat at the guesthouse and it's very cheap for what you get for the price. The room is very basic and open, so expect to hear the noises from the village (but it's quiet between 11pm and 6:30am!). The bathroom doesn't have a shower and is the typical Asian toilet. It's a good experience to get used to showering yourself with a bucket, if you are not already from Asia. But it's totally okay, since it's warm in Bukit Lawang. Everything was clean! The location is perfect, directly in the middle of Bukit Lawang. For travellers on a small budget, I can strongly recommend this guesthouse. For people seeking more luxury or Western standards, this is probably not the place for you.

Yusuf and Rita are so lovely, friendly and helpful. The rooms were very cheap, basic but had fans and mosquito nets. We enjoyed playing rummy kub with Rita and some of the other kids and ladies. The food was great and cheap. We went to visit the kids at Kolibri with Yusuf and also helped collect litter from around the village, the kids do this every Sunday. We really enjoyed spending time with the children and seeing the work that Kolibri is doing to help the kids in the community.

I don't want to complain because the price was very cheap. Our one downside was that there are no showers and sometimes there was no running water. We had to use standing water from a big bucket. And after a sweaty jungle trek we really wanted a shower.
