Cheap and cheerful stopover in Berkeley

Stayed here for an overnight to do Berkeley Green parkrun. On arrival we were met by the owner who was lovely. Showed us to our room which was basic yet clean and comfortable. We went to take some time to have a drink at the bar before we went out and found they had a separate side room with a wooden skittle lane and we were allowed to have a go, even though we were rubbish at it! The owners did state that our room was above the skittles lane and we might hear the rumbling until 10pm. This wasn't an issue for us as we came down to watch the game in the evening but it wouldn't have been an issue to change the room etc. We didn't have breakfast as we were out but we did stay for evening meal the night before. Buttermilk chicken burger was lovely as was the roast pepper lasagne. Decent selection of bar drinks and food variety on the menu.

What a lovely and friendly place The Malt House is .. recommend 100%

From the moment I phoned to inquire if we could all check in at different times and before the wedding we were attending , nothing seemed too much trouble for the efficient and friendly staff. All our rooms were spacious, warm and comfortable with plenty of coffee/tea and hot chocolate supplies. Friendly bar area in which we all met for drinks when we arrived. We came down to a nice full English breakfast and quality cafetières of coffee.

Nice clean place , just a little limited

Location to where I needed to be was great , staff very nice , clean nice food good range of coffee tea and even hot chocolate in the room, quiet but I’m guessing due to being time of the year and a week day

Checking in and out times not clear , room was a little colder than I’d like although there was a fan heater I found in a cupboard Opening times are limited I guess because of winter . Breakfast times where also limited This could be due to the time of the year

good place to stay

We arrived early in the morning to drop off one car, travelling together for the day. At first sight not a very impressive prospect. BUT that evening we found the welcome warm, the rooms comfortable and well equipped and the food both evening (grandchildren) and breakfast was excellent. Recommended.

We were visiting family close by and I was already aware of the Malt house, exceeded our expectation

Breakfast was ok, there was fruit and yogurt to help yourself from a small bowl, melon, blueberries and strawberries, I did think this was a bit sparse for more than 1 table. Our first night there were 2 more guests staying, 2 night 2 more guests on top but the bowl was same size, I love fruit for breakfast but didn’t want to take too much, set cooked breakfast which was fine, plus jug of orange juice. The room was a nice size, plenty of space with a nice sized tv, bath with overhead shower, and a very very comfy bed which was a massive bonus as slept well.

Would be nice to have more selection at breakfast. Otherwise meals were decent

Very happy.

A characterful pub hotel, comfortably furnished and very quiet, it being a Sunday and low season. The staff were welcoming and friendly. Our room was spotless and comfortable with the usual facilities provided. We enjoyed a tasty breakfast with fresh fruit, yoghurt and a good choice of cereals. The cooked breakfast was excellent and the cafetiere of coffee went down well!

I would have preferred the heating to be on in the afternoon rather than later as it was a bit chilly when we checked in. It was cosy later, and in the morning, though. One minor improvement would be a hook on the bathroom door.

Good place to stay, clean, good food, friendly staff.

Breakfast good destination good. Close to Slimbridge wetland. Was quiet most of time but some nights skittles played until 10pm so noisy.

Unfortunately the castle and Dr Jenners house were not open the days we were there only Sun to Wed. Would of preferred to be able to enter room before 5pm but was not a problem.

The bed was soft and comfortable. The room was mostly clean. Breakfast was ok. There were numerous accessories in the room, including a trouser press.

There were no bedside tables and . sockets, none with USB sockets. There were black marks on the plain white duvet cover. The mirror on the table was very dusty. The food was acceptable but overpriced. The ambience was strange and quite unwelcoming. We decided to leave after one night though we had booked for two. We were charged for both nights, though this seemed not to accord with the cancellation policy I read. Please note Berkley castle is closed Thurs to Sat inclusive every week.

Made a good choice staying at Malt House.

I booked last minute to break a long journey and Malt House was perfect for my needs. Comfortable room with everything I needed, everything explained, was greeted on arrival and able to get a lovely meal just before the restaurant closed. Breakfast good with lovely, friendly service. Plenty of space in the car park, really nothing not to like, thank you. Lovely village with lots to see and do if you've time to stay.

Best value for money

Great location great food the chef was brilliant. We came over from Belfast and were made very welcome. We had booked just 1 night and ended up staying 2 night . The Sunday carvery was absolutely out of this world

I had a lovely stay at The Malt House, when visiting for a wedding at Berkeley Castle. It's a great location for walking to the castle. I had a very generously sized room and the most delicious breakfast! Although the hotel and location were great my absolute favourite thing was the staff - everyone was so kind, warm and welcoming. They went above and beyond to ensure I had a good stay and made me feel so comfortable while staying by myself.

The location. The food. Relaxing atmosphere in the communal areas. The staff lovely and friendly. The beds were comfortable. We were nice and warm.

The room was awful we were very unhappy. Cramped, Noise from a machine or something. outside. The bathroom tatty. We expected better for the money we paid. We will not be back although we intend to visit Berkeley more often. We will find somewhere else to stay outside of Berkeley and drive in. We do not mind paying a good price for nice accommodation but disappointed in MaltHouse.

Would highly recommend!

Beautiful olde worlde pub with a warm, friendly welcome and super, clean and comfortable room! This was an overnight stay enroute home ... we had a great evening meal and our veggie breakfast was wonderful! My thanks to the owner , too, who went out of her way to answer a query I had after we had left.
