The city owes its fame to the famous royal castle of Amboise which dominates it, at the Porte de l'Horloge, at the Saint-Denis collegiate church, at the Clos Lucé castle where Leonardo da Vinci died, at the royal residence of Château -Gaillard built by Charles VIII in 1496, famous for its gardens designed by Dom Pacello da Mercogliano and the nearby Chanteloup pagoda. His name is also attached to the bloody conspiracy of 1560.
It is one of the eleven wine-growing towns in the "AOC-Touraine-Amboise" controlled designation of origin area.
Amboise is located in the perimeter of the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
