Have been a regular visitor to Wivenhoe for some time as I have some great friends who live locally. The black Buoy has always been a great bar - great locals, community spirit, plenty of drinks to choose from - live music events. The staff are all very friendly & welcoming - Bit of a home from home.
I found out that sadly they no longer provide breakfast which I was dissappointed with (it was always a highlight for the morning after). Went to Rose & Crown for breakfast - Over priced & awful food - So ended up doubly dissappointed! Black Buoy "Please reinstate the breakfast" Please!

The location - just yards from the charming historic quayside, close to cafes, shops, galleries and Wivenhoe church, and a 10-minute walk from the railway station. It was the perfect starting point for our nature walk along the Colne Estuary. The room was simple, comfortable, minimalist but equipped with what little we needed. The owners have got it just right in terms of decor and en suite bathroom facilities.
There was live music in the pub below on our first night, which was to be expected but a little disruptive - though the music did end before 11pm. No breakfast was available, and the evening food menu was basic and unambitious. We never ate or even drank in the pub itself. Finally, the steam from our shower triggered the smoke alarm on our final morning, which rang for nearly an hour before anyone arrived to investigate!

Great hotel and bar with a really good live band on Saturday night, which we thoroughly enjoyed. There was a good selection of beers, the staff were friendly and welcoming, and the complimentary parking space was ideal, as parking can be difficult in Wivenhoe. I'd definitely recommend staying here if you're visiting the area.
