Booked breakfast on booking but was not inclded on arrival. We had no water in our room when arriving back at 10pm Friday evening so had to dry brush our teeth and could not wash or use the toilet. Needed to use the main toilet in the morning in the lobby and we were given a new room to wash etc before booking out. T he gentleman on reception was very helpful and appologetic.
Bed was uncomfortable and the fact we had no water on returning in the evening made our stay unpleasant.

The staff is very welcoming and took very good care of me. I relocated to the UK and spent my first three weeks at Rose and Crown Hotel. Thank you all for a wonderful experience. My recommendation for newly weds - STAY AT THE ROSE AND CROWN! The rooms in the old part of the hotel are bathed in antiquity but with modern touches. Very nice.
I will be honest, I do not like complaining. The hotel room and the staff is extremely nice. My only complaint is in regard to the restaurant. The only meal they provide is breakfast. I like a hot breakfast, but the only two choices is Full English and Eggs Benedict. Keep in mind, if you ask for something, they will try and accommodate. I feel the cook and wait staff needs training. I asked for an over-medium egg. The wait staff looked at me as if not knowing what this basic request is. My eggs came out, far from over medium. The eggs Benedict, one of the only items they offer, was not good. The eggs were overcooked and the hollandaise was too thick. The cook once made it with regular toast and not English muffin. I was not impressed with the menu offerings or the staff's knowledge of basic culinary practices. No lunch or dinner.... and the management just says that they do not offer any other food because they want the guests to explore more of Colchester's food. That is a very sad excuse for poor management. The truth most likely is that they can't find good cooks, they don't have enough business to support full menus, and no proper staff to support anything BUT a two dish menu. Very poor, in my opinion.

Spacious, amazing staff, the receptionist, the night porter and lovely young lady at breakfast morning of the 31st Jan. Such gems of people!
Love the character of the main building has been maintained.
I stayed one more night on a separate booking. It wasn’t as good as the first night.
The standard double was not worth the price, and I paid more than the executive twin the night before. The executive twin had no issues at all and very comfortable, bathroom amazing.
But in the standard double, the bathroom needed some attention, you do not get a coffee machine (something I didn’t realise at the time rebooking) and it was not as quiet - there was a constant rattling in the ceiling of room 410 that kept us up all night ight. Then the breakfast wasn’t quite the same the morning of the 1st. We waited a fair bit to be seated as the sign asks, were told exactly where to sit at breakfast (no one else there and would have liked to choose) plates were missing from the bar, they ask how your eggs are cooked and my eggs were overcooked. Not that deep but seems silly to ask and bring out something different but not even acknowledge it - I would have been fine, just that tiny bit of awareness makes the different. The coffee is filtered at breakfast but they do have a coffee machine that didn’t seem to be used. Again fine but the second morning it tasted a bit off so couldn’t drink it.
It’s a real shame - paid more the second night and somehow got way less of an experience. Writing in this one so they see the comparison.
Executive twin was fantastic but the second. Book of standard double including the breakfast service was far inferior - just confused how I paid more. Could have stayed elsewhere that night but came back based on the first night which it didn’t live up to sadly.

The girl on the front desk was absolutely lovely, so kind and friendly and accomodating. There was one very sweet room in the 700 yr old part of the building which was the same as what I had seen online. Unfortunately what you can't see online is the non stop creaking sign right outside the room that would keep even the deepest of sleepers up all night.
The original room we were showed had a huge external door leading directly on to the street which was loud and quite unnerving with a big chain and sign as you would see when there are road works - but inside the room. We asked to change and the very kind front desk person showed us to a lovely old room but the sign creaking was absolutely unbearable. She then very sweetly offered us two seperate rooms but one smelt very strongly of fish. In the end we had to cut our losses and move on to another hotel. This was no reflection on the staff but this was not a place that would have been comfortbale to stay.

I had asked for a room with a walk in shower, and was allocated a room on the ground floor , next to the road. It was noisy and I asked for a change of room. The receptionist organised this without any problem, and I ended up in a room in a quieter area, with a 4-poster bed, which was spacious, comfortable, and with good facilities.
The hotel is historic, with bags of character, the breakfast was plentiful and the cooked breakfast was delicious.
The staff were all really helpful and pleasant, and the hotel is a five minute walk from a good Waitrose supermarket.
I went for a walk up the hill to the town centre and Colchester Castle, which took about 10-15 minutes, at a good pace.
The tea/coffee at breakfast, which was served at your table, vould have been hotter, but other than that, I was very happy with all aspects of my stay.

The room was cosy, the staff friendly and very understanding! The breakfast was tasty! But the setting, a 17th century couching inn… priceless!
Found a great deal and just had to revisit the city! Will stay here again!!!
The lack of an onsite restaurant was a bit of let down, not least as the bar area is a wonderful space.

Our room was not ready so we were upgraded to a newer room. More spacious and even had a coffee pod machine
Instructions how to use the shower. The pressure was very strong like a waterfall

Nice comfy bed and clean
Heating had not been put on or tested prior to our arrival. It was minus degrees outside and very cold inside. The radiator/towel rail in the bathroom was not working at all. We had the radiator in the bedroom on all night and room was warm in the morning, however the bathroom still chilly.

Noise from party downstairs, TV not working, room cold on arrival, bed old and too soft - gave me a bad back

Nice service
There was a private party and music and people was loud till 1:30am. I would have preferred to be informed in advance and decide to either stay or look for another accommodation.
There was the sound of a pump running all night which was very annoying.
I only slept 3 hours!

An old historic building transformed into a hotel, I loved the odd hallways and archways but it could be an issue if you are taller, free parking, very hot water in the shower
Because it's an old building the floors are very squeaky and the room is a bit small, no lift

Large room with everything we needed. Breakfast had a very good choice, something for everyone. Not too far to walk into town and lovely river walk very close to the hotel.
The bathroom was dated and would have preferred a walk in shower. There was no grab rail in the bath which as an older couple would have been preferable. I found out the next day that we could have asked for an anti slip mat to put in the bath but there wasn’t one in the bathroom. Had to walk into town as there was nowhere local to eat in the evening

Centrally located and olde world. ( 14 century)
No restaurant - food delivered by uber eats and consumed in bar. Not what we were looking for.

Nice characterful building. Rooms smallish, but it’s a very old building so don’t expect big open spaces. Lots of character in the beams and windows. Bar area was nice. Open fire on the go so felt very cozy.

Beautiful Old Building.
That it no longer functions as a Pub as well as a Hotel. Its a 'Dead Pub'. Access is only through the rear hotel doors, doesn't appear to be open to non-residents, totally empty of people and dead inside. So very sad. I was only told by an e-mail after I'd booked that it no longer serves Lunches or Dinners! So it was a bit misleading. We would have liked to have eaten where we were staying. I would not have booked it if I had been made aware of this from the booking.com website. Yes, it did do breakfast.

Beautiful building
Nice bathroom and shower
The lovely ladies on reception. One went above and beyond to help with taxi’s for us.
The bed was small and uncomfortable
One of the breakfast staff on Sunday morning was very rude. My husband has his cooked breakfast brought out with the egg missing. It was returned without the egg and he was told he’d have to wait. 5 mins later he asked the waitress where it was and she told him the chef wasn’t in the kitchen and it was only the egg missing. My husband asked for a fresh breakfast with the egg very politely and she was very rude in her attitude and response. For the price of breakfast we would have expected it to come out together not in parts. A simple apology would have been fine. The other waitress was much more appropriate
