This is a very comfortable, classy hotel with great attention to detail. The building is possibly Victorian so it has high ceilings and wide corridors with lovely wood work throughout. The decor is elegant and classic understated British. The rooms are really comfortable as are the beds. Breakfast is freshly cooked and waiter service, no buffet. This is my favourite hotel in Colchester.

Have had lovely stays here in the past but this was terrible.
Upgraded our room and we're allocated room 16. Could not sleep at all due to the brightness of the security light which shone bright
green. Measured it using my phone and it showed 8 lumens against legal requirement of 1 lumens.
Night reception could not do anything other than offer eye pads!!!
Spoke to manager the following morning who was unwilling to do anything to address our complaint other than offer discount on future stay (which would involve booking direct with Greyfriars so wouldn't actually be a discount at all!!)
I would recommend avoidng this place until they sort this issue out.
We have stayed numerous times and hosted family celebrations there at significant cost. Sadly our loyalty counted for nothing.
