Maintaining the age of the hotel without affecting the modern comforts.
Unfortunately due to the age of the hotel there’s no lift. This wouldn’t have been too much of a problem apart from being allocated an attic room which was at the top of a steep flight if narrow stairs. Having asthma and arthritis this would’ve made life very difficult. However having spoken to the young man on reception he gave us a more accessible room without as many stairs.

Location. Room size. Most of the staff.
We are regular customers of The George hotel. My issues were that our room was next to a laundry cupboard and they started using it very early, considering check out was 4 hours later than when they woke me.
It would have been great if two extra pillows would be available in the wardrobe (as there is only one each on the bed) and a warm blanket. The room was cold and the heating didn’t seem to work. With it being February and the windows only single glazing, it was chilly in the room. The corridors were very warm.
Hand soap / wash should be provided in the bathroom as well.
We used shower gel to wash our hands.
For us, these are basic requirements in a hotel, especially one of this standard.
One thing that I always find difficult is that the lady at breakfast is unpleasant.
She doesn’t seem to enjoy her job at all which makes me question why she does it? We never get made to feel welcome, more like an inconvenience.
The rest of the staff at the hotel are always wonderful and can’t do enough for you.

Got what I paid for. And it was good to be able to just drop down stairs and in the middle of town

Central location.
Parking was a big problem for us. Car park behind the hotel was full when we arrived at 19:30 and we had to use a car park a 5 min walk away. Okay because it wasn’t raining and we only had over night bags.

The location
The staff was not overly helpful, we stayed for 2 nights and on second day no one came in room to make bed. The bathroom was very clean but lots of limescale on shower head which is very poor.

We liked the history of the building and the location. Also a bonus having a car park.

The location is good and the decor of the common areas is fine
Some of the staff were very poor. No effort or engagement. There were no lamps so you had to get out of bed to turn the light off. The apartment had a kitchen in the description but there was no kitchen.

Lovely beautiful room
The receptionist in the morning when checking out was very rude

Excellent location, right in the centre of the town.
Car park at the back of the hotel, we paid for 48 hours which was £24.
Staff on reception were really helpful and friendly.
Room was very clean and comfortable.
Breakfast was lovely and cooked to order.
Selection of cereals, juices, pastries etc.
Had a meal in the restaurant on the Saturday evening, lovely staff and very nice food.
Even though the hotel was excellent and the location was great...it's on the High street and extremely noisy at night especially a Saturday night. So not much sleep.
That's not the hotels fault but it did spoil it slightly.

The location was great and the staff were friendly
Sadly we were disappointed with the suite room we stayed in… there was no complimentary bottled water, there was an awful smell in the room, we soon realised that the drains were being cleared at the rear of the hotel, this wasn’t nice to wake up to!
There was no shower gel in the shower, but instead there were 2 small sachets to share… not what we expected after paying £230 for the night.
We dined in the restaurant, the staff were great, but the quality of the food didn’t match our expectations.
I ordered Mussels, but half of them were closed and empty…
Breakfast was ok, but nothing to shout about, over cooked bacon, cheap baked beans and some of us had a sausage with our full English breakfast and a couple didn’t have any?!?!
Some of our cups weren’t cleaned properly, so we had to request more cups.
It was just a bit of a disappointment.

A great central location
The rooms were not up to standard in terms of cleanliness sorry to say. The shower had mould and the rooms could definitely do with some maintenance.

The location was excellent. The staff at the bar were really professional and helpful and the rooms were extremely clean.
The soundproofing was poor. You can hear music from the local nightclub until the early hours of the morning. And I could hear the people in the room next to me just chatting until around 5am, so I got a very poor nights sleep. The people next door were talking at a normal volume, it just permeated through the wall.

Staff friendly and welcoming , Excellent breakfast.
Bedroom smelt damp and musty especially in the bathroom . Had to spray the room several times with my deoderant to try to offset . Shower joints were mouldy . An extremely hot towel rail to the immediate upper left of toilet could have led to a burn on bare arm in the middle of the night. It was disappointing considering I had paid £20 for an upgrade. I would definitely stay at the George when in Colchester - just not in room 504.

Very nice and charming hotel in the city centre. I truly enjoy their room design. Everything you need is in close reach of the hotel. The staff was very nice and helpful and the dinner at the restaurant was also quite delicious.
This was not really an issue, but the lights could be slightly brighter. This makes for a very cozy atmosphere though. Please note that there isn't an elevator (wasn't an issue for me but might be for others).

Managment inflexible - restaurant staff great . The bar was full of not hotel residents drinking , bouncers on doors - didn’t feel like 4 star hotel

Check in - A last minute day before booking, (booking.com) reception were kind; I have broken spinal cord disability and was allocated a 2nd floor room. Which also had additional steps on the same floors due to the structural period of the property.
A staff member was allocated to take my cabin sized case up to my room for me as I made my way up the steep stairs on crutches. Other guests offering to assist me along the way. My wheelchair was given a parking space in the reception area. This was appreciated very much, as I had not booked an adapted access room nor was there even a service lift. I hadn't anticipated the difficulties due to my disability being a recent problem. Lessons for me to learn. Hotel was festively decorated and appeared a good level of clean. Very good location to explore the town.
A better luggage transportation to rooms option, we saw many people struggling either due to large luggage as tourists, or frail. My room had what looked like cigarette scorch marks on the inside windowsill and a big lump of plaster missing over the shower head. On a cold new years eve arrival, the room windows were wide open and the remote air control was registering the room temp at 30 C. Not a chance! Once the windows were closed the room felt warmer on my 3.30am return.

Period bedroom with modern comforts. Heating could not be adjusted but supplementary heating available. Comfortable bed. Check in/out experience and dining were excellent and handled very professionally.
Noisy guests going to bed at 2a.m. woke us up, briefly. Towel rail in bathroom was lukewarm.
Breakfast was adequate , unfortunately my husband's full English order was overlooked and had to be chased. No milk available at the table for hot drinks, no tongs available for handling bread/toast, and cereals in deep jars.
However this did not spoil our stay overall and we will be coming again soon.

It is nice historic hotel, nicely decorated and quiet. Great for the 1 night. I booked a single room as it was just for me, which was comfortable.
It isn’t the hotel’s fault, I didn’t check on the website. There is no lift. My room was on the 2nd floor and I had to get my suitcase up and down a narrow set of stairs. Also if they put the Christmas decorations on the outside of the main stair case people could still hold on to the bannisters.

Closeness of venue to the centre of Colchester. Friendly staff, nice range of drink in the bar, room a nice size and stocked with everything you need
Light from stairs shines under door (room 201), maybe a piece of rubber across the bottom would block this out as everytime someone came up stairs the light came on which woke us up.

Good atmosphere in the bar area. Comfy bed and nice and quiet. Good breakfast selection and quality.
Room was looking a bit tired and could do with a bit of decorating here and there.

The close location to the main sights and all the shopping.
Bed was small but comfortable. Pillows good.
Lovely old building with wooden beams and loads of character.
Incredibly noisy with the pub below. Music was pumped out at an astonshing volume from around 1pm relentlessly until 2am.. Then crowd spills out onto the street below and continues shouting and partying directly below the rooms for hours after. We had a street side room and there was no chance of sleeping in that room at any hour of the day.
We used ear plugs and still could hear the noise at all hours.
The bathroom had no shampoo, conditioner or body wash on check in. Some small sachets for shampoo only were provided when we asked for some. Towels were threadbare.
It was a very dimly lit room with weird smells.

Really lovely hotel, well decorated but it was so busy that we could not enjoy a relaxing drink in the lounge bar or anything. Good location and friendly staff
Way too crowded with outside, non-resident bargoers. Could not get any space to have a drink. Ended up spending the evening in the room watching telly. Very noisy with music from downstairs and hard to rest and sleep. Not value for money at all.

Wonderful staff so friendly and accommodating and great venue for my dear mothers wake x
Pity we did not know about the 25 pound off the dinner promotion That would have saved some money The room was ok but not a great view out if window and we do not like the sachets of shower gel and cream So difficult to open There were dispensers in other rooms Also some communication issues between bar staff and reception but generally lovely staff

Great location. Good parking at back of hotel. All staff were very friendly and helpful. Good choice of vegetarian option in restuarant. Comfortable lounge. Interesting decor
Room was decent size. Bathroom was very clean and plentiful hot water. Breakfast was very good value .
All the carpets in public areas were filthy.
The kettle was too big for taps - was real job to fill .
Everything else was fine
