Staff - especially the waitress on Sunday morning who was excellent
Restaurant could have had a bit more atmosphere, food was excellent, but the place was very dull - music wasn't great

The staff were super friendly and helpful. When you get into the hotel there's an instant feeling of calm and that continues into the room which was simple and sparley decorated. It was really lovely to have a kettle and coffee machine so I could have a cuppa at any time during the day.

The room was Incredibly spacious, pristine, good quality toiletries, lovely minibar (genuinely cold). Our dog enjoyed the private courtyard and treats left for him (and a little letter sent to him which was a lovely touch). The bath was spacious enough for two, with separate powerful shower and heated towel rail. Lighting was excellent for make up etc.

Our second visit was just as good as our first. The location, cleanliness, gorgeous rooms and value for money were excellent. Our bathroom was amazing. Staff friendly and helpful.
Breakfast service was the only negative. Had to wait almost half an hour to be seated due to staff shortage. But once we did the food was delicious.

Great location. Easy parking. Very spacious room. Very clean and well equipped. Good to have the heating/air conditioning option. The whole place has a lovely atmosphere and nothing is too much trouble for the cheerful and efficient staff. We had an evening meal and breakfast which were both excellent and again the atmosphere in the dining rooms enhanced the whole experience.
Several reviews mention the green light in the bedroom ceiling which is a bit irritating, but, being forewarned we were able to cope with it.
Whilst it was good to have the flexibility of the heating/air conditioning system there did seem to be a constant background noise which we were aware of in the night.

Very comfortable cozy room. We really enjoyed the breakfast and it was great to have a breakfast in the room option.
Staff were very professional.
There was an issue with the booking system accepting Irish postcodes for me and another from our group. My guess is that the system includes Irish postcodes as somehow being part of the UK. It isn't. This meant we had to pay the £50 damage deposit and wait for refunds.

Beautiful and spacious room with everything we needed, the giant tin baths were also a great extra. All the staff were attentive and very friendly, the hotel is in the perfect location for visiting the local spa and gardens. The food was exceptional and would definitely recommend to anybody staying in Colchester. Thank you to all the wonderful staff!

We have stayed at Greyfriars many times over the years and it is always excellent. Therefore it was an easy choice for my extended family and I to have our late mother's wake in one of the function rooms and to book several rooms for family members to stay over.Hannah was brilliant in organising the rooms and also the room to hold the wake.Catering was excellent and we had great service from Blake who looked after us with drinks from the bar.
Also a special mention to the reception staff who are always friendly and helpful and also the staff at breakfast ( sorry I didn't catch their names)

The room was great and as we were staying as a surprise visit for my wife's birthday, we were given a complimentary upgrade to a suite.
This was great with a birthday greeting inside the room.
Location good.
Bed and pillows were not great and heating was noisy so not a great night sleep.
Staff were a mixture of friendly and rude.
Breakfast experience was not great, we were not greeted when entering the breakfast room and we then had to chase Staff for a menu and question everything about breakfast. It wasn't a self serve apart from juices so then we had to constantly wait or find someone if we needed or wanted anything. If this is the preferred process then I recommend extra staff to support this .
Coming from a catering back ground this service was very poor. And Staff were rude.
Definitely ruined the overall experience. .
I would've re booked instantly but this however has left me questioning weather its worth it.

Good location, nice ambience.
Very comfortable room, very clean.
Staff were very friendly & helpful.
Wouldn’t hesitate to return.
Felt the duvet on the bed could have been thicker as it was a very cold night.
Also surprised that Oat milk wasn’t available. Not a deal breaker as they offer Almond or soya milk.

Love the hotel rooms are lovely good size great decor
I wasn’t happy that rooms are stone cold and not preheated so wasn’t pleasant when u returned to your room as heating went off when u left your room , also bright green ceiling light that keeps room lit all the time do prefer a dark room to sleep

The hotel and staff was lovely, the Bar service was great, however we was disappointed with Christmas Day Lunch, at £165 per person we expected attentive service. We was in a separate part of the restaurant and we was basically ignored. We waited at least 10 minutes before I had to ask about drinks, twice the food came out wrong, I had to eventually get up and ask for utensils. The food was nice but not wow! There should have been a dedicated member of staff for that area. In the end me and my husband got up and left for our room, (probably didnt even notice we left). Def not worth the £165 per person. Everything else was perfect but the Christmas Lunch let you down..
I have already made my point above.

A very comfortable room with space to relax. Breakfast was good quality and variety. The Bar is very small and was a bit crowded. The Dining Room is also compact, but was not too busy. Food and service were very good.
Limited Dining Room Menu. Bar area too small & uncomfirtable. Wine List should be more extensive.

The location was great
Last time we stayed, our room was lovely and we enjoyed our stay enormously. This time we were disappointed. Our room was adequate, not exceptional, the room was noisy because of a Christmas event and the shower leaked leaving a cold puddle to be discovered in the middle of the night. The staff seemed to prioritise phone calls to people waiting to check in or out; we didn’t feel welcome.

We were situated in the Rose room .Bay window . Breakfast was excellent. Full English cooked well and presented well.
Could not really find fault. I suppose we struggled with the coffee maker but that was more down to us .

Everything was amazing from the parking to the room to the location etc etc etc... but not the cost of the breakfast!
The cost of the breakfast was absolutely extortionate! And to be completely honest it really wasn't that great... £25 per person for a very basic full English, then add the tea and toast which was extra!! It came to over £72!

Sadly the fire alarm went off twice one night but just one of those things.

Location great, parking easy in hotels own parking area, room was comfortable and a nice shower
The fire alarm went off twice the same night first time was due to a water leak but no check was done on checking everyone vacated, second time even less people came down to reception not handled well had it been a fire things could have been pretty serious.Asked reception in the morning about this and any compensation greeted with a blank response I trust you will look into this matter and respond with a more positive attitude.Very worrying.
