Don’t miss this awesome lodge if you visit Nirthland.

If you visit Northland you simply cannot miss this place. The lodge is huge and totally private on top of a hill overlooking the valley and the waterfalls. The hosts Candy & Rawiri went out of their way to show us around the property, including a creek nearby where you can spot the glowworms at night. It’s a gravel road driving to property from Opononi but it’s well maintained and suitable for 2WD. Spend at least a couple of nights there, you won’t be disappointed!

Relaxed and wonderful

Spacious clean house with outstanding bush and waterfall views, excellent hosts who went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable and had all we needed. Excellent facilities, fully equiped large kitchen, comfortable bed, large hot shower and efficient gas heating. Pity we only had one night.

Full of enjoyment , super host, highly recommended

The location is peaceful and serene, surrounded by beautiful mountains with stunning sunrise views. The wooden house is tastefully decorated and full of character. The host was incredibly friendly and welcoming, even sharing about their homegrown vegetables and the local surroundings. We truly enjoyed our stay — highly recommended and would definitely love to come back!

I have stayed in 100’s of b&b’s. This was special. The welcome was perfect. Fascinating couple not ‘going through the motions’. The guide around the property was thorough. I will return with my partner (this trip was business).

Very authentic stay

The hosts were wonderful, very friendly. They met us with playing music. Location is extraordinary, yes, you have to get there using a gravel road but it was worth the effort. Fantastic sky with no light pollution, glow worms, kiwis making sounds from the bush. The view from the deck is fantastic. We were farewelled with a Maori song.

A couple of times we wanted to switch off the lights somewhere and internet also turned off. It looks like it is not powered independently from other lights.

Everything about this property is outstandingly good. Candy and Rawiri are welcoming and knowledgeable hosts who are there if needed but leave you to enjoy this comfortable and well equipped Lodge in total privacy. There is a wealth of information about what to do in the area too.

Idyllic and private location surrounded by nature with an amazing hostess.

Candy, our hostess, met us at her own house set out of view of the rental property which was totally private and secluded in an idyllic hillside valley setting, richly surrounded by unspoiled nature. We were treated to a guided tour of the vegetable garden from which we were able to take anything we required. Breakfast provisions were delicious, plentiful and kindly supplied by our hostess together with other basic provisions in the cupboard. We couldn’t believe the size of the lodge which was light and airy with marvellous views all around and very comfortable, especially the bed. Candy showed us where to walk into the forest behind the house at night to see glow worms, we heard kiwis at night and enjoyed a wonderful dawn chorus of native birds. I rescued a little kingfisher which crashed into the window in the early morning- she was stunned and on her back but I gently tipped her the right way up and after a few seconds flew away. Candy is a fascinating lady with an interesting, adventurous life story. We admire your strength Candy, you have achieved what others dream of.

Spectacular hideaway- an unforgettable experience

The drive in is captivating - an unsealed winding road through a valley, definitely off the beaten track. The road up to the property is steep but the reward is spectacular views. Candy was thorough in explaining the house and our every need was catered for, including milk, bread, their own honey & pantry staples should we have needed to cook our own dinner. Candy shared knowledge of Māori & related to the sky & landscape. We snuck out and saw the glow worms & sitting on the verandah as the sun went down listening to the wildlife is an experience we won’t forget! We were sorry to leave and our only regret was that we were only there for one night!

Peace and comfort with great views.

Candi and Rawiti were there to welcome us on our arrival and were on hand if needed. We were given a flying lesson on the house and its facilities, and introduced to the glow worm dell up the hill. Our visit was in the Autumn, so the large gas fire in the living room was very welcome in the evenings. The kitchen was well equipped, and the fridge and larder were stocked with goodies and ingredients to cook with. It was good to eat porridge and drink coffee whilst watching the sun rise over the hill from the veranda. Were the kauri forests and beaches not beckoning, we'd have sat there all day just watching the sun and rain on the woodland below the house. At night, I took a chair out back to watch the Milky Way (good dark sky!) and listen to the moreporks and the kiwis calling. Being away from any main road the surroundings are very quiet. It's a place I'd love to go back to.

Luxury accomodation at budget price

Absolutely stunning location, awesome views all around thanks to huge windows in every direction plus a 270° wrap-aroung-porch. This "humble abode" is luxuriously spacious and the whole place got very good vibes. The infos prepared by Candace, our hostess included not only things to do and the weather but also tide-times, stars visible during our stay and sunrise / sunset. I would definitely stay there again, but would try to stay longer, which I recommend to everyone. Three days is the minimum... The pantry and fridge were so well stocked that we didn't need to go grocery shopping. Did I mention the washing machine (lots of washing powder provided too) and the dryer?

Magical location and comfortable accommodation, with warm, welcoming hosts.

This is an exceptional property - its location; the peacefulness; the night sky; the cicadas on the verandah supports in the morning sun. Inside it's well equipped and comfortable and our hosts were exceptionally warm and welcoming and willing to share their knowledge of the area and its culture without being intrusive.

Nothing. It is a little nitpicking to mention the low pressure in the main bedroom en-suite shower. We had read about this in earlier reviews and our host mentioned it when showing us around. So take is as part of a characterful, unique property that excels in so many other respects.

Amazing stay with an incredible view

The owners are wonderful. Candace showed us around the home and provided a ton of information on the area. We used her travel guide for the area to visit nearby sites. Had we known there was so much to do in the area we would have booked for a much longer time. We absolutely loved the property. The glow worms were so cool to see, the gardens are beautiful and everyone we met were lovely. If we ever make it back to New Zealand we’ll be coming back here. We loved it!

Very good

The place was AMAZING! It's the perfect getaway place away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Candy was also very accommodating and lovely, taking time in orienting us with the place and things to do. The place was complete with everything that we needed. Will definitely go back here next time.

Not really a biggie but the single beds were too soft (I'm a firm mattress type of person). Other than this, it's a place I would go back to or recommend to friends and family.

Quiet and views to die for!

Our hosts were welcoming and had a lot of information of the surrounding area on hand. They even picked some veggies out of their garden with which we made a salad. The lodge is in fine shape, very clean, large and with stunning views. While there, we had a big, windy rain storm, which knocked out the power to the entire area. Our hosts immediately responded with a generator and enough power cords to keep our electronics running and with the ability to run the gas heater. Given many rainy days, we really appreciated having access to a washer AND dryer. Thank you!!

The booking.com website states that the breakfast is "exceptional". What is provided is basically a continental breakfast with bread, juice, fruit and condiments provided. There was a lot of canned food in the pantry, but we generally do not have soup or canned pasta for breakfast. We were glad that we had brought our own yogurt, granola, eggs, etc., with us.

A surreal paradise
