About this house rental

This two bedroomed cottage C.1880 is located on a stunning site 3 min drive from the car ferry. Stroll to the cafe, art gallery, pub, dairy, post office, RSA or bowls club. Take in the heritage walk around the village or just unwind with far reaching views in front of you.

Refurbished in recent years this is a very tidy cottage. Whilst it's a good place to rest if passing through it also makes an excellent base to discover Northland's history, beaches and walks. An excellent stopover on Northland's Twin Coast Cycle Trail, Pou Herenga Tai.

Previously known as ‘Beach Road Cottage’ the cottage has been renamed ‘Orowaru’ to better reflect the surrounding area and acknowledge Māori heritage. Orowaru means ‘sound of rippling water’. You will hear the cottage keep its namesake as you lie in bed listening to the gentle waves of the Harbour ripple by outside.

Beach cottage (also called Orowaru cottage) is a gem. We had a great week there. I can particularly recommend sitting on the front verandah watching the tide roll in and out. Deeply peaceful. And well appointed for your every need. We used the cottage as a base to explore the Hokianga and Whangape Harbours. So many marae, so many early churches, friendly locals wherever we went. I came home with a lovely handmade rug from the Kohukohu Village Arts. The little Kohukohu library is another gem.

Enjoyed yesteryear charm. Excellent little touches. Be prepared to travel for Cafe's in Rawene. Great to walk the Kohukohu village up past the school to appreciate the wonderful old villas. Most were built in the 1800's. Best to purchase a concession card for ferry travel. Much cheaper.

After a busy Xmas it was the perfect place to unwind for a few days . An historical house and a privilege to stay there.
