Very dog friendly B&B with excellent French food and wine.

Very dog friendly B&B, we were made to feel very welcome as was the dog. Restaurant attached to the B&B was excellent and unusual, the dog was very welcome here too - most unusual and a highlight of the visit. Food and wine were excellent. A peaceful retreat, though the village had limited facilities. Nearest main town is Castle Barnard. Bedroom was clean and tidy and bed very comfortable.

Bathroom floor was dirty and toilet was leaking. Plaster on walls needs some attention. All together, in need of a make over and coat of paint. No door on bathroom it was simply up some stairs above the bedroom, OK if you are happy with a Bohemian lifestyle, but not to everybody's taste - this should be made clearer at the point of booking.

Excellent room, great bathroom, nice owner, great location, bit pricey considering BKF not included

I usually stay at the MIT Hotel across the road, but the last time was a major disappointment. So I stayed here instead. The room was great, with a huge upstairs bathroom with lots of hot water. The room itself was excellent, large and comfortable. The owner, a French Geordie, is a great guy. Pleasant, amenable, and helpful. It is above a rough and ready but very hospitable pub where the locals drink, and attached to a French restaurant (altho we didnt try it.) I really liked the place. Bang on the main street, close to all facilities.

A bit noisy as outside drinking went on till late on a weekend. We were tired after a long days walk from Tan Hill, so it didnt bother us too much as we were dead to the world. Although not too expensive for the UK (the entire country is a rip-off - I left the UK back in 1985!), for the same price we got/ would expect breakfast at other places.

Beautiful place to stay.

Really lovely room, large bath was an added bonus. So clean & Very comfortable, in a great location too. Staff were really helpful and friendly, and even provided dog beds.

Beautiful room. Sort of mezzanine floor with lovely upstairs private shower room Central location. Pleasant bar. Food looked very good but we’d already decided to use the fish and chip shop so didn’t try it. Car park at the rear. Choice of local cafes for breakfast

Might be ideal if you can avoid a Saturday night...

I liked the convenient location and the spacious, comfortable room. This quirky double room had a bathroom perched above the bedroom itself, in the attic. The food in the attached restaurant was excellent and the service good.

Unfortunately, I was there on a hot summer Saturday and the carnage in the street outside and under my (necessarily) open window, into the small hours, had to be heard to be believed. However, this was not just from customers at The Forresters but also from the Teeside Hotel opposite. Not great for an early start along the Pennine Way. I'm not blaming The Forresters. Just be aware of the possibility. Maybe mid-week would be fine? It seems a shame that the Forresters cannot provide a breakfast.

Nice enough hotel, but would stay somewhere else next time because of the noisy karaoke.

It was very noisy at night, with karaoke downstairs until late on both Sunday and Monday nights. This could be heard in the room and kept me awake. Also, the restaurant is closed on Sunday and Monday evenings.

It is popular French restaurant with a pub, if you are looking for the quiet, peaceful, serenity of a Buddhist trappist Monastery half way up a mountain in Tibet, then it may not be for you however. If you enjoy a regular pub with friendly local characters then you will enjoy yourself.

Exceed would stay again

Clean, comfortable bed, good quality towels, excellent shower. Filter coffee and fridge was a nice touch. For the price, we thought it was good value and we had a good night's sleep

The French brasserie of the Pennines.

The scallops, pancetta and garlic leaf, followed by the chicken, brandy cream fricassee would alone put the Forresters above high end London restaurants. The staff were very affable and helpful too.

Great location, family run hotel but a lot of noise from the bar

Lovely friendly welcome, nicely decorated room and comfy bed. Bath and shower both fantastic with lashings of hot water. Ensuite was generously proportioned, light and airy. The restaurant serves delicious French food, plus the usual bangers 'n' burgers. We had the chicken tikka masala curry and boeuf borguignon main courses - beef was lovely and tender, red wine sauce was amazing. Fantastic location, right in the village centre, a short walk from coffee shops, supermarket (surprisingly well stocked) cafes and delightful village green. There's free parking round the back of the hotel but there were spaces in the road outside every day we were there. No parking restrictions. It's a family-run hotel, and they are all very welcoming, I would say outgoing characters. This is not part of a chain.

Furniture in the bedroom was a bit tired; wobbly wardrobe and suitcase stand that would put a Strictly competitor to shame with its moves! The rooms are above the restaurant and bar. The bar was extremely lively on the 3 nights I was there, with a bunch of well tanked-up blokes shouting in that special male "weyyy - o - way - o - wayyyy!!" voice that's only used at football matches and when drunk. Lovely lads I'm sure, but it went on until about 1am on all 3 nights, and sound insulation in the rooms is non-existent. Pack your earplugs! Rooms 5 to 8 are over the restaurant, with 7 and 8 being furthest from the bar noise. Rooms 1 - 4 are directly over the bar so even noisier.

The service you are offered in this establishment can only be described as excellence in my opinion. I came upon this place after a month long stay in hospital due to a back injury I sustained almost 20 years ago. The staff here each in their own way have aided in my recovery and I cannot thank each of them enough for their support, trust and kindness. I have not needed a single pain killer for my lower back since. I am not going to comment about the cleanliness, the beds, the rooms, the location etc. Come and see for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

Nothing to dislike. If you do not like music, laughter and a few alcoholic beverages on an evening then this place is likely not for you.

Cosy apartments above pub

Great location, super close to Bowlees Visitor Centre which was our next stop. Ample parking for our two cars in front and behind. Our room had a large loft bathroom. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Room luxurious, but it was nice and cosy. Pub was pretty quiet, no noise issues at all.

Not really an issue with the room at all, but dinner options around are limited and close quite early. Hotel opposite looked nice but was fully booked, so definitely book ahead as there aren't many shops or other food options.

The location was good. Middleton in Teesdale is a very chracterful village.

No breakfast, which was a surprise, especially seeing that only one of the three cafes in the place that did breakfast opened on the morning we were there. It was obvious that a lot of money had been spent some years back bringing the accommodation up to a high standard. I got the impression that they were not making enough money to enable them to maintain it at that standard. Both Middleton in Teesdale and the adjacent Barnard Castle seem to practically close down on a Monday night, so the choices of places to eat is very small. The
