The building is full of character, location great too. Safe parking behind for our two motorcycles, food very good...leaning well towards gastro pub fayre. Plenty hot water to fill a bath , comfy beds. Staff friendly and affable.
Room was quite small

So firstly I've stayed here 7 times over the last 2-3 yrs. So clearly it's pretty good. It's good value for money although breakfast is expensive when you can walk 100m down the road and get as good for a lot less. Food generally is very good. Staff are all lovely and try to be helpful. I've left great reviews before but there's some things that are starting to pull it down and I've ended my stay this time a little bit disappointed.
The bits that pull it down. The minor things I find spoil a stay. The fabric of the building is becoming dilapidated. (Yes it's an old building but it's rooms are looking dated) You can slap as much paint on as you want but it doesn't hide it. I reckon I could make it a lot better for not that much cost. Bar/food area is ok. Rooms? Ours this time. Room 9. Toilet didn't flush properly, the extractor fan in the bathroom - noisy. The drain in the shower looked dirty with peeling paint. Shower very dated, it's yellowing panels look 😱😷(although it could be the lighting see below). Nowhere to put shower gel or shampoo except the floor. Not good in a confined space when you're elderly. Bathroom light - goodness me, get some LED white bulbs instead of that poor (feels like about 5w) dirty yellow lighting that's so dim the mirror is unusable. Ok night temps were around 25C + unusual, I know, but very uncomfortable. How about a fan for the room, hardly expensive. On the room decor, the room was small, the window opened ok but the view is a roof about 6ft from the window so there's limited natural light. It makes the room dingey. Curtains, so thin, allow what little light there is to flood the room at 4am. Some better pillows too. Btw when the window is open you can hear every conversation your staff are having while they have a fag at the back door. Ok the food. Breakfast - I think this is expensive at £16 a head, for paying guests, especially if you don't want a full breakfast. When you have a full breakfast please just put it on the plate. No one wants their bacon, sausage, egg piled up like they're auditioning for MasterChef. It's a full English for goodness sake. The bar food is good, plain food, although the menu sounds fancy with ridiculous terms like "jus". Please just call a burger a burger. I would highly recommend the steak pie but instead of sticking the peas in a pot and the gravy in a pot just serve it.
