I loved everything about this authentic stay in the heart of Gion. The property is Hero’s family home and has been in his family for several generations. It is exactly what I wanted to experience - a real traditional Japanese house with futon sleeping, tatami floors, an amazing Japanese garden. The home is decorated with so much love and attention to detail, so much incredible Japanese art and books and antiques. It was an honor staying there.
Nothing at all, it was all perfect! One thing to note for future guests is that some rooms have private bathrooms but a few share a bathroom - just to set expectations. Also this wasn’t a problem for us at all, but the shower is handheld, it’s not a standing shower. Everything was wonderful and Hero the owner was incredibly attentive and speaks great English. Again, so much gratitude for the opportunity to stay at Gion Koh!

The host was very helpful and friendly - he gave easy to follow instructions and tips for places to visit. It was a fantastic authentic Ryokan experience in the heart of Kyoto - incredible location in Gion.
You could hear other guests in their rooms at times but the host had rules about too much noise after 10pm and before 6am so there were no issues during sleeping hours and all other guests were friendly and respectful.

This was a fantastic traditional house that felt like a museum in the best way, right in the heart of Gion easily walkable between Yasaka Shrine and Kiyomizu. The host was very helpful and friendly, and the house has been in his family for several generations. The room overlooked a garden and fun koi pond.
I’ve slept on futons before, but these were a bit thin and hard. The water sounds from the garden were soothing, but might be loud for some people.
