Fabulous. Such a beautiful hidden gem. The gardens are amazing.

Mimi Calpe is in a beautiful location, in a historical house with striking Spanish/Spaniard architecture and interior design. The botanical garden with African artifacts is a lovely touch, and it’s just a 10-minute walk up the hill to the old Medina.

Unfortunately, despite the incredible charm, it was noisy from the street, and we had plumbing issues — the shower didn’t drain properly. That said, the staff were kind and always helpful, and the charm of the place still made it a memorable stay.

The property is thoughtfully decorated, to be a bohemian update of a period property. It has nice outdoor spaces and a good breakfast. There is a nice cat called Simon. It’s central for easy access to the Medina.

If you stay here there are a few things it would be wise to be aware of upfront: The property is in a noisy location, on a main road with constant traffic you can hear from your bedroom. We were well back from the road, on a weekend, but the traffic noise was clearly audible until very late. Many rooms are closer to the road which I cannot imagine would be pleasant. We visited in May when temperatures were upper 20’s and there is no air-conditioning which makes it very hot and stuffy at night. There are no screens on windows and insufficient curtains so, if you leave windows open you get mosquitos and no privacy. We enquired about this to staff who told us it’s so “cold at night you might need another blanket”, this was very much not the case. The other noteworthy point is that the staff provided only very basic info: here’s your room, breakfast starts at 8. We were unaware of the many nice terraces and pool etc. until the next day. So, if you do go- explore even if it looks like you’re going places perhaps you shouldn’t. To illustrate the service, there was limited outdoor seating for breakfast and a couple rightly pointed out that sitting in the blazing sun was a bit much. Instead of offering them a cool place in one of the other seating areas nearby (that guests would not see easily) they offered no solution and the guests had to move their own table settings and food inside. Finally- this is a very expensive place for Morocco, and very much shabby chic. The experience does not match the price.
