Fukinomori is a beautiful resort-style hotel and there was a lot we really enjoyed about our stay. The onsens were amazing, and we booked the private onsen for an additional ¥2,000, which was absolutely worth it. We also paid a little extra for a deluxe room, which had large windows and even a massage chair. After a day of hiking, that massage chair was very appreciated!
The biggest disappointment for us was the beds. We completely understand and expected traditional Japanese futon-style mattresses on the floor, but we were very surprised by how thin these were, less than 3 inches thick. Once lying down, it genuinely felt like we were sleeping directly on the floor. We were also provided with only one pillow each.
Unfortunately, neither of us slept well at all, which really affected our experience. At this price point, we expected a much more comfortable sleeping setup, even within the traditional Japanese style. The quality of the bedding simply did not match the price of the stay.

Beautiful outdoor onsen tucked in the mountains, exceptional kaiseki ryori focused on local ingredients, and warm, knowledgeable, and welcoming staff. It was a great way to cap the day after a walk from Magome-juku to Tsumago-juku.
