Magnificent setting with upmarket rooms

The location was lovely and there was a beautiful pool area by the lake to sit during the day or enjoy a glass of wine in the evening. Good breakfast cooked to order and charming service. Good communication with the management. It was convenient to have a restaurant on site with tasty pizzas.
We were disappointed with our room (Merlot) which was at the rear of the property and was small and dark. There was just one chair in the room and a rail to hang clothes on.

The whole property is beautiful. The lodges are located on a farm surrounded by a lake, vines and grazing cows and horses with beautiful views to the mountains beyond. The relaxed pizzaria on site is pleasant. The rooms are of a good size and nicely furnished.
What should be a delightful spot just lacks a bit care and attention to detail.
By South African generous standards the breakfasts are a bit meagre. The rooms were not of the highest cleanliness. The water jug had no filter. The chairs on the stoep had backs that were broken. A table and chair with no lamp to work by. Bin by the pool overflowing. Maintenance workers carried out work in our room on the hot water system - no complaint about that - but we were not informed about this in advance. All relatively small issues that showed a lack of attention to detail (and perhaps a too busy manager - we were staying during the grape harvest - a hectic period in the winelands).
Our room (Pinotage) had a slight stale smell on arrival. It dissipated with the windows open but you could smell a faint whiff of sewage when sitting on the stoep. On our 3rd night, on returning after dinner, however the whole room stank badly of the drains. The staff refused to move us for our last night claiming the place was fully booked - it was not. There was no manager on site Sunday/Monday when we needed assistance and our requests to the other staff met with indifference.
All in all this is a place with considerable potential. Great location and setting.
It just needs a little bit more care to make it really exceptional. We were on a recce and had planned to come back next year with a group - sadly we shall not.
