Never met more friendly staff! We been met by most friendly staff and very helpful. Shame I'm not sure about gentelmen name,which was working during night (maybe Matt?) .But big shout out to him,always here to help.Amazing experience. Beds are super comfortable.

MacDonald Houstoun House is a beautiful place, hotel and grounds are lovely and gym/swimming faciilities are fantastic. Restaurant and staff are lovely and friendly - Matthew particularly is an excellent host. All staff are lovely and our room was very nice and comfortable. Great location for Edinburgh - if you don't mind a walk there is a train station about 25 minutes walk in Uphall, where you can get a train into Edinburgh in 20 minutes. The rhubarb and custard sweets on reception are also a lovely touch!
Argh....the showers!! So, in the room, the shower was OK power-wise, but just far too hot, and as soon as you tried to adjust the temperature the power was affected - so this was frustrating. However, this was nothing to the showers in the leisure facilities, which were just useless. They had nice overhead showers, but literally zero power, I think it would have been easier to wash my hair under a tap. It's such a shame as the rest of the leisure facilities are really good - pool is lovely and gym superb.

The location was ok but there was very little else to do within walking distance. Although the grounds were beautiful.
Breakfast service was ok but could have been better and the cooked food was really oily. The walls of the room where very thin so you knew when your neighbours where up and about

Shabby state of buildings. Mouldy single pane sash windows. Tired bathroom. Worn carpets.
