Victor's Residenz-Hotel Saarlouis

We stayed in the same room as last time, and was happy to see that my comment about the old and uncomfortable mattress had been taken into account: we had a new, comfortable mattress! Thank you! Breakfast was nice but quite expensive. On our firt morning the restaurant was closed and we had to cross the street to their "club" to get breakfast. Staff was nice and friendly. Dog-friendly, a dog bed and food and waer bowls provided. Underground parking is good and safe.

Unfortunately, there was a fire alarm during our first night. A Christmas decoration with candles took fire around reception. Lighting candles on a Christmas decoration is a well known fire hazard, how could anybody in a hotel not know this ? The fire alarm rang in the hotel for at least 15 minutes, waking us up. The fire alarm actually sounds like a car alarm, so at first we thought it was coming from the street, not from inside the hotel. After a few minutes, we heard the sirens of the fire trucks. 5 fire trucks came and we saw they came straight to the hotel. This is when we decided we had to get out fast! Next to our room was the fire escape stairs: We took them, from 3rd floor to ground floor, but when arriving at ground floor, there was many doors, and NO INDICATION where to go to get out! No indication of "Notausgang" / "fire exit" on any door. And once you are down the fire exit, you can not go back, it is one-way. We had to try ALL the doors to figure out how to get out. One door was to the deserted kitchen (another place with high fire risk!), one was to the food storage, another door opened to more doors, etc. We lost precious time to find our way out! Luckily there was no smoke and no fire on this side of the hotel! Once on the street, all staff and customers were already outside, we were the last ones to get out. Staff told us that "if there had been a real risk, we would have come to pick you up": SERIOUSLY?!! They were all outside on the street and we were left alone without information in our room on the 3rd floor. I attach photos of our room's fire plan, and fire escape door on 3rd floor for info, as well as of the fire brigade intervention. The hotel is old, and by googling, we found that it is at least the 3rd time a fire breaks at this hotel. Corridors fully covered with old wall-to-wall carpet, another major risk in case of fire. Escape route was not clearly indicated in the staircase at G/F.

I asked for a room in a quiet area of the hotel, and was allocated a room at the front of the hotel which looked on to the busy main road into the city. This wasn't quiet early morning when busy traffic started passing from about 5 am ! So the noise disturbed sleep. The second night I asked to change to a room at the back of the hotel which was very quiet and no noise to disturb sleep. Reception were very obliging :)

I had a room to the back-side and therefore was very quiet. The room is big enough and comfortable. Breakfast has everything needed and was more than enough.

I enjoyed the breakfast very much. good quality, enough variations and friendly staff.

This hotel was quite a pleasant surprise. A number of previous reviews that we read were not very positive and we were a bit cautious in booking but we were glad we did . The hotel is immediately off the bike trail and easily accessible. Reception was very easy and pleasant and the young lady who greeted us was very very pleasant , helpful and just a delight to speak with . Bike storage was in a large locked cage in the parking garage . Lift from parking garage to our really nice , clean and bright room (110) made it easy to move our bike panniers . Bathroom had toiletries , was very clean and quite large . Good room lighting with a large window in the room . On site restaurant had great food choices for dinner at a very reasonable price point . Breakfast was one of the best breakfasts that we have had in a hotel over our many years of bike adventures in Europe . Many food choices - both hot and cold . Will definitely stay here again if our bike trails lead us this way again .
