Peaceful location out in the country, yes the odd train went by but that never bothered me. Bed very comfortable. Staff very friendly, lovely and warm, plenty of free parking and was only 5 mins from where I was working. Wished id tried the food as locals told me how nice it was plus could hear the guy in next room saying how lovely the food was. Great tea and coffee selection in the room. Food menu in room was great idea. Convenient access to car park saves you having to walk through pub.
Could hear the person in the next room clearly, every time they left the room they had to bang the door so not sure if that was because the door was hard to close (room 2) lights above bed didn't work but hey still had the lamp next to bed so not an issue. Bit difficult to fill kettle just use the cup to fill with water but you get that in most hotels. Don't click on directions on booking.com as those take you to some manor house/ apartments just type in the pubs name.

The friendliness of the staff, nothing is too much bother.
Bar is eclectic with plenty of choice.
Food is magnificent and reasonably priced.
Rooms are very clean and comfy.
That's its 230 miles away from where I live, otherwise I'd be back regularly.

Food was good for the price and beer was good and fresh
During our 1 night of stay in the Beacon and Railway. The wifi didn't work in our room when reported it was not dealt with properly. The chef told me there is someone local who comes at the bar he can have a look but never got fixed. So I felt I was lied to. Plus My phone reception was very bad so I could do anything related to internet for the whole night I stayed there. No wifi No reception. And you can imagine not having a wifi in 2025 is an absolute waste. There was wifi in Bar but you can't expect your customers to come to the bar just to use the wifi. They should have offered some compensation from their side as this was promised facility when booking but was not available. So if you are booking please be aware. I also thought the WiFi was already not working before we came but they never bothered to fix it. Until some customer came along and found about it. But they just dealt with very unprofessionaly. Should have almost given some compensation atlist. Never booking them again.

Location was good for where i needed to be next day. Comfortable Bed and spacious room. Good car park which was essential.
I did not anticipate with the hotel being part of a Pub that Food and a drink would finish early and that was what inspired me to book for that experience. I should have checked when I booked.

The amenities
7.0 / 10.0
The room was basic but clean and functional. No worse than branded budget hotels. The staff were friendly.
The room was very cold and the only heating was a small oil heater. Not good for a cooked November night. Breakfast was ok, but I had a steak and ale pie for dinner one evening. The steak was tough, fatty, and inedible. The gravy was just brown water and tasteless. No hint of ale.

The staff were brilliant, friendly and helpful
. I don't remember booking a quiet room, ours looked at the railway line and the trains started pretty early waking me up. This is not the hotel's fault but should be mentioned.
The stay was very pleasant and the staff couldn't have been more helpful.
The noise from the trains, the hotel is by a train line and they started pretty early waking up.

The location and facilities. The staff were brilliant, made me a dinner when kitchen is normally closed. Very friendly and accommodating. Views were stunning. As the hotel is also a pub, there was a great atmosphere
As a single traveller staying for one night only, I only needed basic facilities, and that’s what I got. Television, WiFi phone charging all available, but the room was very small, functional everything I needed was there, but it would have been nicer with a bigger room.

Owners were fantastic and made us feel at home. Had a great first night in the bar, so many friendly people. Made us feel like we were regulars.
Fantastic stay will be staying again.
Honestly felt it was a great stay. No complaints.

The atmosphere was fab, locals very welcoming, beautiful location
Needs some TLC and the room wasn’t as clean as I expected but the communal areas were to a good standard, although it is an old building with character

8.0 / 10.0
The room had everything you need for an overnight stay. Kettle/tea/coffee etc, excellent shower, extra heating if required, plenty of lights, windows that open, comfortable bed. Nice breakfast environment and food. Very helpful staff.
The trains pass by from about 6.15, though it’s not bad with the window closed.

We booked a last minute stay here on our way down to Devon. Arrived after 10 pm and a very nice and helpful member of staff showed us our room and then served us some very reasonably priced pints of beer.
Our room was large and well furnished, with an extra room connected to it with 3 or 4 single beds in there. Very nice bathroom and the price we paid for the room was great.
Location was absolutely brilliant for the M5 and much more interesting than staying in a motorway services motel or Premier Inn type place.
You can hear the trains go past, but it is the Railway Inn after all! Ear plugs sorted out the noise fine.
We would definitely stay here again.
There were a few cobwebs around the place in our room, high up and on the light fittings and it could do with a bit of sprucing up, but for the price we paid, we weren't bothered about that.

We liked the bar which had an authentic old fashioned feel. Great choice of very good beers and ciders. Good honest grub too I enjoyed my faggots and mash immensely. Staff and locals very friendly. Very good value for money.
Room was a little small but immaculately clean and had all facilities.

Location lovely even with trains being so close
Room could have been cleaner mostly bathroom. Bed was terrible you could feel every spring digging in you needs new mattress

Pretty location, friendly staff. Decent room but a bit noisy with the train line so close.
Had a curry which was pretty poor. Tasted like it was from a jar. Probably ordered the wrong thing, someone had faggots which seemed nice. Whitebait was good.

The staffs are very friendly and the other customers as well. the room was very clean.
the only limitation was the narrow stairs and no lifts which then leave you with only option of carrying your luggages.

In the country, lovely atmosphere from around. Room very tasteful, bed good.
Occasional louder train noise, but that was almost part of the generally quiet countr yatmosphere.

Very good value for money and just off the Motorway, so very well located. Food was delicious - and plenty of it! Good amount of carparking space. Tea/coffee making facilities in the room - always appreciated! Friendly and helpful staff.
The extraction fan in the bathroom went on far too long :( - not an issue in the morning, but when you're trying to go to sleep, not so good. We learnt for the second night to only use the light over the sink, so that was a result!
Sticky tables in the dining area.

This is a delightful quiet old country pub/hotel in a beautiful area just off the motorway. Staff are helpful, considerate and go out of there to make a pleasant stay. An added bonus was live music, sole guitarist, out on the patio on a hot summer evening. All was quiet by 9.30.

Nothing, See below.
Booked as a overnight stop on a long drive from up North. At the time of booking there was confusion over the price charged, probably not the hotel's fault but it did not augur well for our visit. I do not like being ripped off. The room was barely big enough to contain the small double bed. We were in the middle of a heatwave, yet there was no fan offered, nothing. The room was unbearably stifling. After a brief rest, my wife wanted to move on, to which I agreed and we continued our journey homeward. Seriously this was the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. Of course, no refund was offered. As regular visitors to the Gloucester area, we will not be using either Booking.com or this hotel again. PS A further clue was in the hotel name, not sure how many trains thundered pass during our short stay.

Very friendly helpful staff, this inn provided a peaceful stay and a good breakfast with views over beautiful countryside.
The facilities are adequate and reasonably clean but the inn could do with a bit of renovation. The postcode did not take us to the venue, but a phone call gave us clear directions.
6.0 / 10.0
The staff were very pleasant and welcoming. The location next to the rail line was great. I loved seeing and hearing the trains.
Unfortunately the single bed looked damaged, tge floorboards were very spongy and creaking and we could hear the bowling going on past 10pm. It didn't bother us too much, but was loud.
The food choices were great, but unfortunately not cooked to our liking.
