Located far away from worldly distractions, Sue's lovely house is in a remote part of the Beara peninsula. Its the perfect place to recover if calm, nature and the wild Atlantic are your thing. Her house is well equipped, delightfully cosy with inspiring textiles throughout. Her garden is a little oasis. Even wet days spent reading before her picture window with mermerising view of the sea are restorative. We highly enjoyed our second stay there, a recommend.

The cottage was gorgeous, with great views and was very quiet. The garden is also fabulous. Only negative point for us was that the bed was not comfortable so we didn’t sleep very well. Would recommend this cottage nevertheless.

Amazing and cozy cottage which feels like Home ♥️ our favorite place is the patio outside with the perfect view on the water and ring of Kerry. We got quit a few visits from a bunch of dolphins in the early morning and evening!
We will definitely come back and stay longer, 8 nights are way to short. Wonderful landscape and the best place in Ireland to relax🌞♥️ we really loved all the different kind of flowers in sue‘s garden!
Thank you so much for one of the best experiences we had.

A beautiful peaceful place, cinematic views well off the beaten path. The Beara Peninsula and surrounding countryside has breathtaking scenery at every turn. We felt we were living on a movie set, views out the picture window were beyond spectacular. The cottage itself is spacious, immaculate and every need addressed, especially the kitchen. Would definitely return!

We had 5 nights at Dove Hollow. We were blessed 3 beautiful sunsets (our first 3 nights).
On the ring of Beara road we were greeted with a rainbow. We knew we were in for something special.
Susan and Marks cottage was a very special place. Updated and charming we immediately felt at home. The kitchen was a pleasure to work in, and the breezes from the windows upstairs and down were lovely.
We loved the cows passing by, the awe inspiring views, and the charming patio perfect for morning tea or evening cocktails.
We are eager to return and encourage anyone else not to hesitate in renting this little piece of Irish heaven

We revisited Dove Hollow 2 years after our first stay and it was even better than the last time!
The addition of a picture window overlooking the ocean in the living room has transformed the cosy room. Access to the green house with a dining table was another lovely feature that we used when the weather didn't allow us to eat outside.
The house retains its cosy character and I particularly appreciate the well equipped cottage kitchen with plenty of herbs and spices and cooking utensils to make cooking the local produce (including hedgerow blackberries) a pleasure.
The kitchen is the heart of the home and we enjoyed family meals with the stove lit around the roomy dining table.
This property is all about atmosphere and character and the stunning location in a magical part of the Beara penninsula.
We enjoyed fabulous hikes, cycles and sea swims, fuelled by lots of seafood and Guinness!
Thank you Sue - we would love to return :)

Well equipped and thoughtfully furnished house with magnificent sea views where we immediately felt very much at home. The mixed weather prevented us from making full use of the lovely garden but we nonetheless had a great time, and loved this remote hideaway. Even just watching ‘the weather’ through the window was a satisfying and relaxing activity. Situated on a quiet road, perfect for walking, (however a car is definitely needed for mobility).
We finished our week’s stay refreshed, and we hope to return.

A house between sky and ocean in the middle of a magnificent moor, some dolphins in the morning to excite the children... An unforgettable place and a very pleasant house to live in.

We LOVED this property. The lush vegetation and views from Sue's place were remarkable! I gave it 5 stars for location since it was what we were after but you should know it is a jaunt to get to most things if you're looking to explore off of the peninsula. The home was cozy and the sunsets were incredible. I loved walking the bluffs nearby and we couldn't get enough of the cows next door. Sue was very responsive and I would stay here again.

Wonderful cottage and location
Wonderful cottage and location
This is a charming cottage with a lovely homely feel and a stunning location.
We spent 2 weeks here and found it extremely relaxing to be in the peace and quiet of the countryside with a wonderful view of the ocean.
A small outside terrace with a table and chairs was a favourite spot for breakfast and dinner with an amazing view across the bay to the mountains and all day sun.
The property was thoughtfully decorated with antique furniture and art and had a restful atmosphere.
The woodburning stoves were a lovely feature if the evenings were cool and the kitchen was a favourite cosy sitting room.
Beds were very comfortable and bedrooms spacious.
An extra bathroom or dishwasher would have been useful, but in holiday mode we didn’t mind and the kitchen was well appointed.
The garden was delightful and we enjoyed using the bikes for hilly cycles.
Beara is a wonderland of mountain hikes, coastal and woodland walks, cycle routes, boat trips and wild swim spots.
Lovely nearby villages for pubs and cafes and Castletownbere has 2 good delis for home cooking and a supermarket.
We have booked again for next year !
Thank you Sue

Everything we could have hoped for. Beautiful house in a wonderful garden in spectacular West Cork. Short drive to Eyeries for everything you need but tucked away behind the rocks giving privacy and amazing views. And do keep the gate closed, we woke one morning to the cows looking over the wall!

We had a wonderful 7 night's in this idea location. The scenery by day and the stars by night make this a magical place to step off the world. The house is so cosy, gardens beautiful and the views breathtaking. Once you have mastered the roads there is a breathtaking view around almost every bend. Would love to return again.

What an idyllic setting overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Kenmare Bay. It was just such a pity the local pubs and restaurants were all closed due to Covid 19 restrictions but we will definitely return. The cottage is a haven on tranquility and ideally suited to couples wiching to get away from it all. A must for a romantic stay.

A Stunning Retreat
We had an amazing week in July at this stunning property. Like the Beara Penninsula landscape, every bend in the house yielded a beautiful surprise. We had a few clear nights and each skylight revealed another star filled section of the sky. My husband and I enjoyed coffee every day on the flowering patio overlooking the sea. The beach is a bit far if you are looking for a swim, but there are plenty of absolutely stunning views on the way. It was quiet, remote, and just what we needed. . The home is beautiful, warm and cozy, and full of light with garden and sea views. We would definitiy return!

This house was perfect for our mini family reunion. For my sister, my nephew and me in an area where we have family connections. Everything that we could have wanted was supplied with quality appliances and furnishings. The attractive decor was enhanced by Sue Gilkey’s paintings. Everything very convenient. The garden was really lovely and the patio overlooking Kenmare bay was perfect if only we had had more sunshine. The location very suitable for exploring the entire peninsula.

We had a great week exploring the beautiful and wonderfully friendly Beara Peninsula with Dove Hollow as our base. Dolphins spotted - through the 'bins' from the bedroom window. Cottage is tucked away "behind the hill" and gives a real opportunity to switch off.

Aug-Sept 2016 ... AMAZING and MAGICAL!
I don't understand the negative reviews... the owner/housekeeper are MORE than accommodating! Rosarie did all of our shopping so when we arrived everything was perfect. This cottage was ideal in every way... a beautiful traditional Irish cottage as the website says! and a bonus we got engaged here so it'll always hold a special place in our hearts! Sue has done an amazing job w/ this gem and we can't wait to return! Also, look at how little you're paying for this gem!!!... amazing value- what is wrong with people?!

Our money was refunded.
We arrived at the property at about 8PM on October 14th. We thought that the key was hanging by the back door as that is part of the information sent to us. Or we could call Rosarie, the housekeeper, for help getting in. There was no key and Rosarie didn’t answer either phone number. We called 4 times. It is a remote location and was the proverbial dark & stormy night and we couldn’t find our way back out to the nearest town until morning. We slept in our car. In the morning we made our way to town and I received a message from my husband, here in the US, that the key was in a different location. We went back to the house and got in only to find that the electricity mostly wasn’t working. The overhead lights came on but nothing that plugged in worked. So, no refrigerator, washer/dryer, TV, charging ability or WiFi or electric heater. We called the housekeeper again, this time she answered, we explained the situation, she arrived about an hour later and reset a breaker but it wouldn’t stay reset. She messed with it and it seemed to be on. My sister was quite cold and went to bed. A few minutes after the housekeeper left the breaker went out again. I wanted to leave as I didn’t feel safe but by the time the housekeeper had arrived and gotten things to look like it was working it was getting later in the day and my sister was afraid of getting lost again so we stayed the night in the house. I reset & reset the breaker until I was able to email the owner that we were leaving in the morning. Also the water started out clear but then turned brown - it wouldn’t clear up. I did let it run awhile.
If that sounds like your idea of a good time - go for it.
The owners did refund our money.

Remote idyllic location in a quaint and well appointed cottage
Remote idyllic location in a quaint and well appointed cottage
We felt at home immediately in the cottage. Between the beautiful paintings and simple but well thought out accommodation we had everything we needed. The first night we turned on the TV but found out it did not work and we were fine with that. Instead we turned to the books that the owners have in a bookshelf upstairs. We positioned 2 wingback chairs (with lovely pattern and colored covers) in front of a window in the living area and looked out at the sea and read books. The wireless worked well and we stayed connected throughout the stay.
The area of the cottage is remote yet glorious. If you want to go to pubs and be in a town setting this is not the location for you. If you want a vacation with plenty of natural beauty, cozy and homey environment, peace and quiet then this is highly recommended. After a short period we were able to light the Stanley and keep it going well. I so miss the smell of the peat fire and the warmth of the heat going through the house radiators. Susan states in the cottage information binder that she uses the briquets. Briquets come in logs that are lashed together with green binding and can be bought at most small grocery stores in area towns. You can buy a bag of kindling wood to start the fire and for 2-3 Euro you can purchase a small box of fire starters which you only need a small piece of to help start the fire. We kept a fire going at a "simmer" stage one
grey and overcast day so we could have a meal simmering in the cast iron dutch oven on the top of the Stanley. For us, using the Stanley gave us a unique, sense of place experience. We felt Irish, not just because we have Irish blood but because this is how the Irish live. Yes you could have central heating in the cottage which the owners may add someday but right now the cottage can be cozy with 50 degree fahrenheit, driving rain and wind outside. The inside of the house is simple but elegant with wonderful splashes of color and texture. The gardens and birds outside are delightful, one morning we took photos of a visiting hare outside in the garden.
You can take walks from the cottage and we highly recommend going to Dursey Island and crossing with the cable car. We also recommend when you do this to walk out but the road and return by the path vs the opposite. We had lots of rain this September with cool and damp temps. This did not keep us back and when it rained all day we decided to go to Midleton and tour the Jameson distillery.

Beautiful place but some inconveniences
Beautiful place but some inconveniences
We spent two weeks at Dove Hollow Cottage, mostly enjoyable mainly due to the character and location of the house, which is indeed quite special on the Beara Peninsula, as praised in many other reviews. However we also found some shortcomings, for which reason we would choose another accomodation on a future visit to this region: due to modest inside temperatures the house obviously generally needs heating in the evenings, even in high summer (we were there in August). As may not be evident from the object description on this website: There is no modern central heating in place. Instead you need to fire up an old kitchen stove with wood or peat to get some general warmth into the house. At first we found this romantic, after some days a little inconvenient, because you also need to clean the stove every day. The burning material is not provided for by the landlords, meaning you have to obtain this on your own (you can buy it at two groceries stores in the next village). Another downside to us, was that the location of the house is a little far off and there are no facilities whatsoever nearby. To go to the next village by car took us about twenty minutes, to got to the next little town took about forty minutes (driving carefully, which we recommend in Ireland due to mostly narrow and winding roads). As a consequence it is for example not possible to have drinks at the village pub and then just do a small walk home. So you are more or less confined to intensive car usage when you want to enjoy gastronomy in the area and social life in pubs. But if you mainly want your quiet and be close to nature and don't mind a litte inconvenience on the technical side, we can recommend Dove Hollow Cottage for its outstanding location, its solitude and the beautiful natural surroundings in sight from every window of the house. Finally a clarification has to be made to the object description on the amenities section: while there is a TV-apparatus in the house to watch DVDs, the TV is actually not receiving TV-programmes, so there is no regular TV-reception. A free-of-additional-charge wifi however is present, which we found quite convenient for checks on the internet.

Beautiful Cottage on the Kenmare River
Beautiful Cottage on the Kenmare River
We enjoyed our stay at this remote cottage on the Beara Peninsula. The view from the cottage was spectacular. The area, in our opinion, is the most beautiful scenery in Ireland. We made daily road trips exploring all three peninsulas in the Southwest region. If you have physical issues, the stairway upstairs is a small challenge. Make sure you ask Rosaria, the housekeeper, how to operate the hot water for the shower. The only issue we had was how remote the cottage was. Day trips to the Dingle Peninsula, Ring of Kerry and Cork is doable. We decided to leave a few days early and drive to Ennis and found a motel to have a more central location to see the Cliffs of Moher and the West Coast scenery. The directions to the cottage could be more clearly defined.

Breathtaking Cottage Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean
Breathtaking Cottage Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean
A few things come to mind as we are driving in. Where are we headed, why are there so few houses are we on the right road? All of a sudden, we arrive at the Stone Cottage and immediately our collective breath is taken away. What a spectacular view, what an amazing cottage, what a relaxing patio that overlooks the wild Atlantic. I’m glad we arrived when it was daylight to take in the absolute beauty of the Beara peninsula. After spending several awestruck minutes looking out from the patio we entered the cottage and even though the pictures on the website are great it does not prepare one for the warmth and charm of this amazing place. The kitchen is spacious and well equipped with a dining table that you will need to draw straws for to see who will have the seat with the view of the ocean. There is a completely modern and functional bathroom on the first floor and a very cozy living room as well with another great view of the ocean. Upstairs are two cozy bedrooms, the master which has a view of the ocean from a skylight in the gently sloping roof of the cottage. We spent most of our days touring the ring of Beara and other parts of county Cork (make sure you drive around the Ring of Beara as the views are spectacular). However the best part of our day was coming back to our cozy cottage by the sea where we would make dinner and then sit outside on the patio overlooking the ocean. We both felt so at peace here and understand why Sue loves this place so much. As the week came to a close it was really difficult to say goodbye to the Stone Cottage but we had an amazing and very memorable trip that will stay in our hearts and minds for a long time or at least until we get the chance to come back. Finally Sue has done a great job with the owner’s manual so look there if you have any questions. She was really helpful before we left and answered a number of questions we had about the cottage and things to do in the area including visiting a great pub called Teddy O’Sullivans where we met some of Sue’s friends who could not have been nicer. I’m sure there is more to say, but I will close by telling you to take a chance on this amazing cottage for your next vacation, a place you will never forget and one you will likely long to return to again and again.

One of our best vacations! The location provided fantastic nature and cultural experiences for the whole family. When we needed a quiet retreat, hiking, or seaside, it was all closeby. If the weather forcast is for cooler temperatures, you will need to make a number of Trips to load up on peat bricks. There were not enough on hand when we arrived to last a full day. But our two boys really enjoyed learning how to use alternative energy sources. While many things to do are right near the property, be prepared to use you car fairly often when you want to visit some of the nearby sites. We went to the sea caves, cable car, several nearby beaches, stone rings, etc, and were never dissapointed. The quality and selection of food from the markets, especially in Castltownbere, were very good. We all were sorry to leave.
