Motomiya

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Motomiya and the owner, Keiko. This was my absolute favorite place that we stayed in Japan. We got one room for the kids and one room for us, and both were very clean and comfortable. The futons were thick and firm and we each had control of the AC in our rooms. The bathrooms were communal but there are only like four guest rooms in total so sharing 2 toilets and 2 showers was never an issue at all. The location was wonderful for our hike from Magome to Tsumago, and Keiko had all the bus schedule information to help us get back and get to our next location. She even called a taxi for us! The one thing I HAVE to mention are the meals. The dinner we were served upon our arrival was one of the best meals of my life. We had a total of 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners, and they were all amazing and delicious. Also, while we stayed there, it rained cats and dogs. We were immediately drenched but Keiko showed us how to stuff our shoes with newspaper overnight so they were dry and ready to go in the morning. She also had extra umbrellas on hand for us to use. The entire area is simply magical and I recommend staying here to anyone.

The minshuku is in a very scenic location, with our rooms looking out over rice paddies. The host, Keiko, was marvelous. We were worried that our kids (ages 9 - 17) would not eat a traditional Japanese dinner, but the food was so good that they all enjoyed the dinner, even going so far as picking apart the small whole fish that each was served. The rooms were nice, the AC kept us cool, and Keiko arranged a luggage delivery service for us so that our luggage met us at the other end of the hike.

Keiko-san was most hospitable. She welcomed us warmly after a long day of hiking the Nakasendo trail, and prepared an excellent traditional Japanese dinner for us. The room was quiet and the beds comfortable. We enjoyed a hot bath and peaceful night’s rest, and were served a hearty breakfast the next morning. She even delivered our luggage to the bus stop, so we could still take a leisurely walk to a shrine nearby and through the beautiful countryside! Highly recommend this unique guest house!

The host was lovely. Food was delicious.
