Ty Newydd y Graig in English means “ new house on the rock” which, in the 1800’s, it was. It is built of limestone quarried from the rock that shelters it, and over 200 years later it remains “as solid as a rock.” The quarried rock face can be seen behind and to the right of the cottage. It backs on to Y Graig, a limestone nature preserve and area of ancient woodland. Until we bought the cottage nearly 60 years ago it still belonged to the family that built it whose descendants live in the village. We hope to continue this tradition.

Because of its unusual, solid construction dictated by the natural rock foundations, the cottage has its quirks, like steps in odd places. The high kitchen step is because the kitchen follows the rock underneath. It would have been impossible to build the kitchen on the same level as the main room. The narrow, twisty stairs are the original ones and difficult for the elderly or those with physical limitations. It is not wheelchair accessible.

Ty Newydd y Graig is a period property that might look old fashioned to modern eyes. The antique furniture is in keeping with the house and has always been there, but otherwise the cottage is well equipped with modern appliances. Its oddities, like unexpected steps, cannot undergo cosmetic surgery so it is important our guests are aware of them in advance.

The property is perfectly placed for walking and exploring Y Graig, or for taking day trips. Snowdonia, Offa’s Dyke, zip-lining and many more adventure opportunities, beaches, shopping centres, and Chester, a lovely medieval city with a Roman amphitheatre are close. Groceries can be delivered by Sainsbury’s, Morrisons etc. The nearest village shops are about three miles away. Shop 5 miles, pub 1½ miles and restaurant ¾ miles.

The cottage was warm, cosy yet spacious. The home made cake that welcomed us was delicious and there was lots of information handy about the local area. The beds were really comfortable, the walks in the local area were stunning, and the local pub was excellent. We were so sad to come home. Truly stunning location and top notch accommodation.

The cottage is lovely.
The cottage is lovely.
The cottage is lovely.Once the heating was on it was extremely warm and cosy. The little snug room being the smallest obviously gets the warmest so I really liked that room. The supplies left for us were very useful. I always need to find a shop midweek for more bread and milk but not on this holiday. Just one criticism I have is that it appeared the pillows were feather as a couple were escaping. Of course you might think this is the best luxury that could be provided but for asthma sufferers this could bring on an attack so I think that all the agents who let this cottage need to check what all the bedding is with the owners and then put in the cottage description if the bedding is feather filled.

The accommodation was exceptional, cosy and well positioned for touring north Wales and surrounding areas, the views from the property were breathtaking. We based ourselves here for 2 weeks but have managed to cover the whole of the coast from Chester to holyhead and also as far as Liverpool, and St Helens, Knowsley safari park as well as other parts of the Wirral, I would certainly use again and definitely recommend it.

Having family in Wales, we wanted somewhere that was equidistant to all family.

Having family in Wales, we wanted somewhere that was equidistant to all family. This cottage was perfect. Rachel, who oversees the cottage was so friendly and very helpful with advice on the surrounding area. With three kids ranging in age from 16 to 22, It was great to spend quality time with each other, but still have the room to spread out as well. We particularly loved the snug. The bedrooms are very spacious and extremely comfortable. Nothing has been missed, everything you need is available. A real home from home experience! A return trip is definitely on the cards.
