Casa Candelitas is an architectural jewel perched above an emerald forest that stretches down toward the Pacific—a true sanctuary for those seeking an authentic experience of the heart and soul of Costa Rica’s Pura Vida. Awaken your creativity, nourish your soul, and quiet your mind while surrounded by beauty, serenity, and complete privacy.
Located just a 12–15-minute drive from downtown Sámara and its beaches, the house enjoys wonderful breezes, fewer insects, and a peaceful setting away from noise and distractions. The infinity pool invites you to relax with a glass of wine or swim laps while taking in views of the ocean, lush tropical plants, butterflies, birds, and the surrounding natural world. Both the living area and the master bedroom open directly onto the pool, allowing you to step straight into the water.
The fully equipped kitchen opens toward the mountains and connects to a covered outdoor patio with a BBQ and a large dining table. On the top floor, the yoga, art, massage, and relaxation deck offers spectacular 360-degree views of the mountains and ocean, along with opportunities to observe birds and monkeys in their natural habitat.
Each bedroom is a private, separate unit with its own bathroom and an elegant, creatively designed shower. The master bedroom offers a unique outdoor shower experience, allowing you to feel as though you are showering in a tropical garden.
The house was co-designed by the owner and artist, Deanne Sabeck, and architect Erik Reise, whose work has been featured in an article in The New York Times. The furniture was also designed specifically for the house, as were many of the unique glass-art installations. Created by Deanne, these one-of-a-kind works transform the spectrum of light into brilliant, colorful forms. Her public art installations include projects for the Costa Rican resort Florblanca, Mel Gibson’s home, San Diego International Airport, and numerous other locations.
While Casa Candelitas is an ideal vacation home for couples or families with older children, it is not recommended for young children due to the easy access to the pool, the lack of safety railings in some upper areas, and the separation of the bedrooms.
All three bedrooms have air conditioning, ceiling fans, and high-quality beds: a king in the master bedroom and queen beds in the other two bedrooms. The living area and kitchen do not have air conditioning, but the ocean-facing doors and mountain-facing windows can be opened to create a wonderful natural cross-breeze throughout the house.

Unique quiet paradise stay, with our adult family. If that is what you are looking for this is the place. We rented ATV’s to get around, as it is on top of a hill and about 15 min drive from Samara.

The home was unique and clean and met our needs. We like privacy and this place offers plenty. We were exploring and doing activities up and down the area so this location was great.

This house is nicely decorated with a unique layout but was more remote than we thought. The pictures on VRBO were not representative of the current state of the house. It does need TLC. Each 3 bedrooms had their own bathroom, but it is important to know that only the master has the toilet and sink indoor. Although the other bathrooms are connected to the bedrooms (via a door), there is also an outdoor access which was partially screened. It was the same for the master shower. It is not for everyone, and we had to adapt to it. We also ran into few issues. As many houses in CR, only the bedrooms have air conditioning. As for the common living area, there are doors and windows on either end of the house to let in a breeze. The temperature outside was easily 95 to 100 F (35 to 38 Celsius) during our stay with no breeze! It was too hot to cook or sit there in the evening. We decided to use the unused 3rd bedroom to hang out. The air conditioning was not working but was promptly fixed. Unfortunately, we also had a problem with the pool. There's a big tree dropping flowers for 2 weeks during the year. It made the pool dirty and unusable. A pool Cie came to clean it, but it only lasted for one day. The owner was very understanding and offered us a compensation. She had no control over that and did what she could under those circumstances. The highlights of our stay were the visit of the howler monkeys, the view of the sky from the rooftop at night and the meditation penthouse.
