Ostsee Hotel Travemünde

The location was prime and the check in was smooth. It was a small apartment, with adequate facilities as described and it was very clean and well-maintained.

Since this is an apartment where all of the windows face the street, better blackout curtains would have been nice since the ones currently on the apartment didn't keep the room dark at all. There could also be hooks that could have been provided for hanging the hand towels next to the wash basin. We were expecting a single queen bed but instead we got two single mattresses that were next to each other so that was not very comfortable. But these are all very specific issues. It was nothing that impacted our stay too much.

Die Wohnung war angenehm ruhig und hell. Das Zimmer war geschmackvoll eingerichtet. Die Küchenzeile war sehr gut mit Essgeschirr und Kochzubehör ausgestattet. Das Bett war angenehm. Die Mitarbeitenden waren sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend.

Leider wurde vergessen, uns den Schlüssel zu deponieren (späte Anreise), sodass wir nachts auf der Straße saßen. Allerdings kamen, nachdem ich glücklicherweise jemanden erreicht hatte, 2 Mitarbeitende extra nach Travemünde gefahren, um uns zu öffnen und haben sich rührend um unser Wohl gekümmert. Die Wohnung ist im 3. (oder 2. ?) Stock ohne Lift, was für mich vorher nicht klar ersichtlich war. Mit schwerem Gepäck eher ungünstig. Der Mitarbeiter hat uns aber freundlicherweise die Koffer hochgeschleppt. Das Badezimmerfenster bräuchte einen Vorhang oder anderen Sichtschutz gegen draußen.

Compared with other hotels in Travemünde, this hotel is slightly more reasonably priced. Many hotels in the area seem to take advantage of the ferry traffic to charge inflated prices that are not really justified by what they offer. This hotel is a little less expensive. Its location is also very good, right in the centre, with lovely views of the harbour and the sea. The room itself was perfectly decent and clean. Dinner is also available at a reasonable price.

The biggest problem is the absolutely terrible communication. First of all, something I noticed with several hotels I contacted in Travemünde and Lübeck: even when you write to them in English, they reply in German, often with automated messages. This hotel was no exception. For a business working in international tourism, this is frankly ridiculous. If a hotel advertises on Booking.com that English is spoken, guests should reasonably expect to receive replies in English. Even worse, this particular hotel simply did not respond to my messages through Booking.com or to the special requests submitted with my reservation. After two unanswered messages, I eventually had to call Booking.com customer service, at my own expense, and ask them to contact the hotel on my behalf just to obtain a simple answer. This is completely unacceptable. Communication with guests should be a basic part of running a hotel. Other disadvantages include the lack of parking facilities and the absence of a breakfast option. The hotel is also quite noisy, something future guests should be aware of. There is a church immediately next door, with bells ringing during the night and early in the morning. In addition, a door near our room kept slamming throughout the night because a window had been left open, creating a draught. Overall, the impression was of a hotel where several basic details are simply not given enough attention. The room was clean and acceptable, but the organisation, communication and attention to guests’ comfort leave a lot to be desired.
