Our 2 night stay at Orchid House

Clean and well equipped with kitchen parafanalia. Quiet area with gated entrance. Bed very comfy and looked beautiful. Bathroom shower excellent. Sofas comfy. Towels provided were proper size bath towels, nice and fluffy. Overall we had a nice stay over the 2 nights.

Key box a little tricky to work out, but worked it out in the end. Some small repairs to the walls needed. Cannot park outside the property, although it's a short walk up the side path to the destination, so not a problem really. Non slip bath mat in the shower would be a bonus as no grab rail.

We stayed here for two nights & chose the property as we liked the fact it was self-contained, & self-catering. The location was good for us, & it was a nice & quiet area. The bedroom was nice, & the bed was quite comfortable….the bedding was clean. On first impressions, the property seemed nice & amply sized for a two night stay, but on closer inspection we found a few issues….

We booked the accommodation in January for a stay in September, so by the time we were due to stay, I had forgotten that the access code had been sent to me in January. I messaged the property on here twice asking for the access details (the day before our stay, & the morning we were due to travel), but received no reply, which caused me a great deal of anxiety before we travelled….luckily I spotted the earlier message from the property owners in January, so we were able to access the key safe when we arrived ! Not a good first impression though, disappointing that they didn’t respond to my messages. Unfortunately, we found the bathroom to be in need of TLC as there was paint missing on the wall by the radiator, & all around the shower tray the grout had cracked & the tiles were separated from the shower tray, leaving quite a big gap, which I believe resulted in the musty smell in the bathroom. The listing on here stated that toiletries were provided, however all there was, was a part used bottle of shower gel in the shower & a bottle of hand wash on the sink, so I was glad we brought our own supplies ! There was only one part-used toilet roll provided, which was not enough, & we didn’t feel comfortable knocking on the main house to ask for another one (& felt there was no point messaging the owners, after the no response previously), so we had to go & buy loo rolls ! We felt that the cleaning products provided in the bathroom could have been put in a container or cupboard rather than just left on the floor at the side of the sink, & this would have made it feel a bit more homely. Unsure whether it’s because it is the end of the season & maintenance is due to be carried out soon, but just saying how it was for our stay.

Could be so much better

The area was quiet and not too far from shops etc

The property clearly hadn't been cleaned when I arrived and when I complained about it the owner came to see and said the cleaner had had an emergency the day before and had to leave it but he assured me the bedding had been changed. However looking at the state of the cobwebs and dust in the place it looked like it hadn't had a thorough clean for some time and he said they'd had an epidemic of spiders! He never even apologised. Underneath the bed was filthy so that's clearly not been moved for ages either. There were finger marks on the kitchen cabinets, the bathroom bin hadn't been emptied and there was hairs on the toilet (which also sometimes gets stuck when refilling), and bits of food in the microwave and fridge Looking at previous reviews it appears the substandard cleaning is a recurring theme.The next day his wife came over and did apologise and offered me a partial refund for the cleaning charge which I accepted. Also, there was only one tumbler but about 9 wine glasses (odd for a 2 person accommodation). It could also maybe do with a couple of lamps in the lounge to make it more cosy. As stated in the listing there's no WiFi (why not in this day and age?) but it must also be in a mobile signal blackspot as I couldn't even get a mobile signal most of the time, so WiFi would be a big help. The radiators are rusty and there's gaps at the bottom of the shower tray. Something has obviously been removed from the wall in the bathroom, but they've not bothered sanding down the filler and painting it so It looks messy. Also it's in someone's back garden - stayed there before when they were obviously away but this time they were home and it just didn't feel private enough as could see into their kitchen and vice versa. I'm sure they could put a fence up to separate it, wouldn't take much.

The bed was small and hard. My husband is 6ft2 and his feet stuck out of the bottom. When I looked up at the ceiling above bed there was a huge cobweb. The bathroom also not as clean as could be - bits on floor and hair. A shame as we have family in Birkdale - ideal location for us.

A great location, good price, but missing a few special touches

The location and convenience of this property were just what we were looking for. The directions, parking, key access etc were all great and the facilities inside were well maintained, clean and tidy. A lovely hot shower and very comfortable bed!

Beachfront is a bit of a stretch - the images make it look as though you can walk from the property to the beach, but naturally the grounds are fenced off, so actually when you are there, you could be miles from a beach as it's not at all obvious and not the short stroll one might imagine. I has read that there was no wi-fi and thought this was due to the secluded nature of the home, but it's at the end of a residential street! Not having wi-fi when essentially the apartment is in the back of the family's garden then feels a bit stingy and unfortunately it's that kind of thing that makes you start to notice other things.... - The images make it look as though the property comes with a private seating area, but when we arrived quite soon after we could hear the children playing in the garden, so us going to sit outside could have been a bit awkward. - There is a lovely kitchen with tea, coffee and sugar, but no milk. I know it didn't say it was provided, but there are no local shops and would it be too much of a stretch to provide a few UHT cartons, or a little bottle of milk, or even a small jug of milk? The back door of the hosts' house is less than 10 metres away. - One of the sockets on the right hand side of the bed didn't work, so it was a choice between using the lamp or charging my phone. - The shower is great and really nice and big, but there's nowhere to put shower gel etc other than on the floor of the shower tray. - Only providing one towel per person also feels a bit mean. Being stereotypical here, not many women don't use a separate towel for their hair, so the hand towel it was! There could have been more towels elsewhere but they weren't obvious and not mentioned on the welcome notes. It's great, but it could be lovely - It feels like it's just a money making exercise and not something the hosts particularly want to do or enjoy.

Very cold and no heating, only 15 degrees and central heating did not work. Place was damp and smelly with mould around bedroom windows and in the bathroom plus lots of rust in bathroom.

Bathroom shower wasn’t working properly only upper shower head working and water spurts out sideways of pipe and in need if freshen up. Blonde Hairs were on sofa , not ours Bed was small to sleep in and sheets / bedding need to be upgraded, felt old and shabby. Bedside light to the right was not working.

Nice sized room, separate bedroom and bathroom. Easy access and parking, everything you need. Kitchen was well equipped and there is a seating area just outside to enjoy the sun.

No Wi-Fi, I was able to use data plan but hindered my work with slow speeds. The advert never mentioned it was or was not supplied. Slight grumble is all, I mean the stay was great in all.

Excellent value for money, hosts were very welcoming. Kitchen was well equipped, set in the grounds of hosts’ family home. Was travelling on my own with my son, felt very safe, short walk to Birkdale for amenities and fantastic fish and chips.

Although bedding, towels etc and main areas clean, it was not spotless, microwave was splattered and smelt of baked beans, bathroom floor had hair on it, cupboard fronts had finger prints. Although property is not advertised as having Wifi it would be useful as we had no phone signal in the apartment.

The lighting in the bathroom needs improving. Both the sink plugs need replacing, Shower pipework needs slight attention. Very simple jobs that would make all the difference.

Either this is a scam or someone has created a misleading advertisement

No Keys or code for gate was handed over - when I spoke to them over the telephone they said booking.com had made a mistake and they only offer minimum three night stays - all they wanted to do was blame booking.com - there was no offer to refund the money saying we should "take it up with booking.com" We just want our money back

It was adequate for our needs .

The location was ideal for us as we were visiting family, and because we live near the sea we felt quite at home.

We just felt the whole place could do with a refresh the bathroom especially as this smelt very musty and some of the fittings were hanging of the wall.
