Sawrey House is in the most gorgeous quiet location out of Windermere. It has a beautiful garden which can be enjoyed from the courtyard or the various seating areas inside. There’s wonderful food options- I had the afternoon tea and a charcuterie board and both were amazing. The staff were so helpful and it felt like a family stay away from home. I have already recommended this property to my friends.

The staff were excellent , I was there for an ultra marathon and was out all day Saturday . When I came back there was a note from the staff noting I had been out running and wished us well & left the breakfast menu for us to fill out . Nice touch

We came 20 years ago, and the location is still phantastic, right next to Beatrix Potter's Hill Top Farm (opens 10 am book online). Fab views onto garden (with chess set) and lake Windermere. Very nice modern silver/black/white decor. Bar if requested, super comfy lounge. Big bedrooms. Window opens(but take care). You choose breakfast the night before from extensive list, good quality but not massive and no buffet. Extensive free parking.
However, the host does not live on site, and as we were the only guest(?) it felt a bit Marie Celeste by comparison with previous visit. The heating came on after our check in and was then very comfortable. It would feel nicer if you brought a house party/wedding/big group with you.

Having never visited the Lake District before we had no experience of the best location & best accommodation. Fortunately we chose Sawrey House Hotel in Near Sawrey, mainly because it looked superb, the rooms looked great, it was well priced & wasn’t ‘dog friendly’ (No offence dog lovers).
Hotelier David Bulmer was the perfect host and made us feel very welcome. The hotel is beautiful & the surrounding area is a quiet unspoilt part of the Lake District. It was a perfect location as a basis to explore the various key locations, including Grasmere, Ambleside, Coniston, Derwent Water, Esthwaite Water, Bassenthwaite Lake & Tarn Hows etc, away from the overcrowded Windermere & Bowness.
Even better, the hotel is immediately beside Beatrix Potter’s Hilltop Farm, where she wrote many of her books.
The evidence of her inspiration was all around the Sawrey Hotel, with bunnies, squirrels, pheasants and much more wildlife visiting the garden each day.
Breakfast in the hotel was made to order, and we filled in our selection from the menu in advance each day. The quality & presentation of the food was superb! The hotel doesn’t currently offer lunch or evening meals, but does offer afternoon tea & charcuterie boards. However, there are loads of restaurants nearby (our favourites were Billy’s in Hawkshead on 5 mins drive away) and the Boardwalk Bar & Grill in Windermere, which can be accessed via a 10min ferry trip (with car) from nearby Ferry House to Ferry Nab. (£6.50 per car or free for Blue Badge Holders)
Our favourite spot by the water was at the south end of Esthwaite Water, only 2mins drive (15mins walk) from the hotel.
The hotel is a boutique b&b so it is quirky and doesn’t have all the mod-cons but that adds to its charm.
Overall we enjoyed a fabulous stay & we’re blessed with 4 days of sunshine which I understand is a rarity in the Lake District!!

Nice property with plenty of thought in reception rooms decor and objet da.
Paying the same room rate as a couple £90 pn) but finding myself in the smallest room overlooking the car park with the single bed and not enough room to swing a cat !!

Location for active people like our selves was excellent. Breakfast and the 2 evening meals we had were very good indeed.
We were in room 6. The bedroom is excellent, however the bathroom is tiny to say the least.
