If you want a cancun party, this is not the place. Beautiful facility with great food. Very quiet and relaxed

The good: Location, room (we got upgraded to a penthouse. All rooms are ocean view, it seems), the beach would have been great if not for the massive piles of stinky sargassum and the sea turtles private tour.
The bad: the food was hit or miss, mostly bland or barely edible, lukewarm and the drinks weak. The buffet was better than the ala carte restaurants, but just barely. Even the Mexican food was bad! A couple of times we saw dried leftover food stuck on the supposedly clean plates and glasses.
I’m not sure about the other glowing reviews that I was reading before I booked but we’re definitely not going back.

I have mixed feelings about the Akumal Bay Resort: It was very hit-and-miss. Some of the staff were really nice, attentive and helpful - but then some of the staff were distracted and seemingly unaware that you were even there. Some of the food was great - and some of it was just outright bland and tasteless. They cooked my wife and I a beautiful beef tenderloin, but all the desserts were consistently poor. Just no flavor at all. As for the buffet, get them to make you an omelet for breakfast. It's the only thing that will be hot, as everything else will be room temperature at best and cold at worst. The rooms themselves were nice. Housekeeping was good, as far as making up the beds and keeping the rooms clean every day, but whoever was responsible for stocking the mini fridge must have been missing in action - even after phoning the front desk to request a re-stock. In summary, we enjoyed a wonderful and relaxing week there. But... Would I stay there again? Only if the price was right and I was willing to spin the wheel and take my chances. There are far worse places I've stayed at. Just as there are far better too.

Resort is a bit dated but very well kept. Staff was very friendly and prompt. Food was good, nice à la cart restaurants. Drinks were just ok. Beach was good. Long drive from airport, about an hour and a half.
