The Sunset Tucano Lodge

The location which is off the beaten track and a stone throw from some amazing beaches. Saw a lot of wildlife just within the grounds of the lodge itself.

If you’re the kind of person that enjoys a snack in between meals, make sure you bring them with you! Closest shop is over an hour away by boat!

Sunset Tucano Lodge was one of the most amazing accomodation experiences of our lives. I definitely advise arriving by boat for the beauty and adventure of it! We arrived with our "wet landing" and walked about 10 minutes up a hill. Our bungalow was spotlessly clean and perfect for our family of 4 (2 adults and 2 teenagers). 2 of us were dealing with a little traveler's tummy upon arrival and Guillermo brought us some tea that healed us right away. We loved the sounds of nature from our bungalow all day and night. We loved jumping into the boats for our tours of this incredible place. We loved playing in the big waves on the beach. We loved the food. We loved all the people working at Sunset Tucano. We loved the dogs (they are socially aware and will leave you alone if you ignore them, but will adopt you if you want!). You should know in advance that there is a walk uphill from the beach, that the shower is lukewarm (but feels great in the heat and humidity), and that the bathroom wall doesn't extend all the way to the ceiling. We give this lodge our absolute highest recommendation for the sheer adventure of it, for the clean, safe, and special rooms and food, and for the wonderful people who work there.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Sunset Tucano! The rooms are basic but comfortable. You can birdwatch from your hammock and also enjoy a hike along the Drake Bay Trail. The highlight is how wonderful the staff are. Thanks so much to Isaac and Jairo for taking such good care of me. And to Guillermo who was very communicative and assisted in arranging all my tours, including a transfer to Puerto Jimenez. They walk with you to the beach to make sure you get on the right boat for your tours and are always available to assist with whatever you need.

The lack of aircon could be a problem for some in hotter months. But the rain in the afternoon/evening cooled it down and the room had two good fans. I appreciated the shelves in the rooms but some additional hooks to hang clothes would also be useful, particularly during wet season when you have wet jackets etc. Some bedside lamps would also be nice. Just minor suggestions though as otherwise everything was great and I would highly recommend a stay here.

From the moment we arrived by boat and were greeted with a warm welcome from Guillermo and his son, we felt looked after. This is a place run with love and care. Nice home cooking and you can fill up your water bottle from a larger bottled supply. Beautiful gardens to relax in (hammock provided!). We spotted toucans, a tayra (we think) scarlet macaws and much more. Guillermo was helpful organising trips - we went snorkeling at Cano Island, and into Corcovado National Park. Both were great days out (back in the hammock by 2.30pm each day!).
