Apartamento do Sol

A Place in the Sun… Perhaps Too Much Sun! Apartamento do Sol is a beautiful villa located high on the hillside, literally a couple hundred meters above sea level near Calheta, Madeira. The elevation provides absolutely amazing views of the ocean from the patio, living room, and bedrooms. The apartment is well equipped with many of the comforts of home, including on-site parking, gated entrances, a washing machine, dishwasher, and more. All of these amenities made our one-week stay at Apartamento do Sol quite enjoyable.

The downside of Apartamento do Sol was the heat, even in September. On most days, the temperature inside the apartment became almost unbearable. Because the property faces southwest and sits high on the hillside above the sea, it is fully exposed to the afternoon and evening sun. Without air conditioning, window coverings, or even ceiling fans, the sun shining through the expansive glass doors made the apartment nearly uninhabitable from approximately 14:00 to 20:00. Most evenings, we ended up dragging chairs onto the front balcony and sitting in the shade until the apartment finally cooled down. The steady breeze coming from the sea helped somewhat, but it wasn't enough to cool the apartment sufficiently for comfortable sleeping at night. Bottom line: Apartamento do Sol is an amazing property with spectacular views and many excellent amenities. However, based on our experience, we would not recommend it during the hot summer and early fall months unless air conditioning or better sun protection is added.
