The area and the settings are spectacular and you can spend days exploring the area. No matter what your ability, there are drives, walks and climbs in a variety of surroundings.

We have some of the best coastlines and mountains on our doorstep, and wherever you are, keep your eyes open for wildlife. The area is home to a wide variety of wildlife, many less common elsewhere, as well as being a regular migration site for many species.

Our solitude and peace is often an attraction to visitors, but there are villages and communities nearby, many offering a great welcome and range of attractions and places to stop and see.

If you prefer the quieter life, you can just sit and view the coast and mountains in the view from the garden bench with a cuppa, or maybe take a few minutes leisurely walk to go fly fishing by the quiet haven of Loch Cul Froaich.

Meall Dubh is a traditional former crofting cottage traditionally built from local stone possibly reclaimed from the remains of another building just to the side of the existing cottage.

The name ‘Meall Dubh’ translates in Scottish gaelic to ‘Black Hill’ and is a direct reference to the hill of the same name just opposite the cottage. The larger than usual windows (for an old crofter’s cottage) in the lounge and the kitchen allow great views of the mountains of Assynt from the kitchen dining area or the easy chairs/sofa in the lounge.

In between the cottage and the hill opposite is Alltan na Fithriach which is a pretty burn stream leading to Raffin Beach and was the site of an old corn mill in the 19th century. Of course, there is no milling done there now but the beach is a wonderfully quiet and unfrequented place to gaze across the sea to the mountains and look out for wildlife. There are regular sightings of basking sharks, otters and whales from this spot during the summer months. One guest took a picture of whales from Meall Dubh garden.

Raffin

Although remote and very peaceful, Raffin is a friendly and busy little “township” containing around 10 dwellings. Raffin’s residents are busy with a diverse range of activities such as crofting, pottery, writing , painting , “Lochinver Llama Trekking “. Last, but not least, the ‘Living the Dream’ Tea and Snack Van at Stoerhead Lighthouse sells great homemade cakes during the summer months

The cottage was in a very scenic and peaceful setting which suited us. We used the cottage as a base for some local walks and other walks further afield. We discovered that the cottage was about 10 miles from the nearest main road and it took about 30 to 40 minutes of driving on a single track road to get to the main road. The nearest grocery stores were in Lochinver. There was quite a lot of traffic on the single track road, with people visiting the lovely beaches at Auchmelvich and Clactoll. The distance away from the road may not suit everyone. The cottage had all the facilities that we needed, including dishwasher, washing machine and fridge/freezer. Initially we found the kitchen and lounge to be rather cold, until we were able to get the woodburner stove working. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and love the area.

Myself and missus loved the remoteness and quiet. Cottage is in fantastic condition. We will more than likely be back at some point. Highly recommend if you savour being in a remote place.
