Bring the whole family together in the Kent countryside.
St Andrews is a spacious Georgian country house near Deal and Sandwich, particularly well suited to family gatherings, multigenerational holidays and weekends with friends. There is room for grandparents, parents and children to enjoy time together, a large private garden and beautiful countryside walks almost from the doorstep.
Dogs are welcome too, making it possible to bring the whole family rather than leave anyone behind.
THE PROPERTY
Dating from around 1820, St Andrews combines the character of an old English country house with the space needed for a relaxed group holiday.
The house has generous living areas where everyone can gather together, alongside separate spaces where different generations can do their own thing. Spend long evenings around the table, let the children settle down with a film or games or find a quiet corner with a book.
Outside there is a large private garden with plenty of room to relax and enjoy the countryside. In summer, make the most of long evenings and the BBQ. In winter, come home from a country walk or pub lunch and light the log burner.
It is the kind of house that works particularly well when several generations want to holiday together without having to spend every minute together.
A WONDERFUL LOCATION
St Andrews sits in the small rural village of Tilmanstone, surrounded by the East Kent countryside but remarkably close to the coast and some of the most attractive towns and villages in Kent.
Deal and Sandwich are around 10 to 15 minutes away.
Deal is perfect for a morning by the sea, with its long beach, pier, independent shops, cafés, restaurants and Saturday market.
Medieval Sandwich is one of England's best preserved historic towns, with winding streets, old pubs, independent shops and walks along the River Stour.
Walmer and Kingsdown are also close by. Follow the coast through Deal and Walmer to Kingsdown, where colourful beach huts line the shore and the Zetland Arms sits directly on the beach.
For a traditional sandy beach day, the beautiful bays around Broadstairs are around 30 minutes away.
BRING THE DOGS
Dogs are very welcome at St Andrews and this is a particularly good part of Kent to explore with them.
Footpaths lead through the surrounding fields, woods and country lanes and there are miles of coastal walks around Deal, Walmer, Kingsdown, Sandwich Bay and the White Cliffs.
Many of our favourite country pubs also welcome dogs.
SOMETHING FOR EVERY GENERATION
One of the reasons St Andrews works so well for extended families is the sheer variety of things to do nearby.
Spend a day exploring Dover Castle and its wartime tunnels, walk along the White Cliffs, visit Canterbury Cathedral or wander through the beautiful gardens at Goodnestone.
Children can enjoy the wildlife parks, sandy beaches around Broadstairs and outdoor activities at Betteshanger.
Walkers can explore the countryside directly from the village or tackle sections of the North Downs Way and spectacular Kent coastline.
And sometimes the best plan is no plan at all. Head into Deal for coffee, have a long pub lunch, walk the dogs and come home to spend the evening together.
FOOD AND COUNTRY PUBS
This corner of Kent is exceptionally good for food.
Some excellent destination restaurants are within a short drive, including Updown Farmhouse, The Blue Pigeons and The Dog at Wingham.
There are also wonderful country pubs scattered through the surrounding villages, from The Griffin's Head at Chillenden and The Duke William at Ickham to the Zetland Arms on the beach at Kingsdown.
Deal and Sandwich have excellent independent restaurants, bakeries and cafés and there are several superb farm shops nearby if you would rather bring everyone together for dinner at home.
A GREAT BASE FOR GOLF
Golfers could hardly be better placed.
Royal St George's, Prince's and Royal Cinque Ports are all close by, putting three of England's great championship links courses within easy reach of the house.
Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club offers another spectacular coastal option overlooking the English Channel.
