Staying in this beautifully restored historic machiya in Kyoto was a truly special experience, offering far more space and comfort than a typical hotel, with charming traditional features, a peaceful private garden, and a great location near transport and local spots, making it a relaxing retreat we’d happily return to and stay much longer in next time. The house had a mix of Japanese and western furniture styles. No full kitchen, but the kettle, microwave, Nespresso machine and fridge were enough for us. We 'checked in' on arrival at the designated hotel, and a driver and concierge drove us to the property and explained its history and showed us around. There are some important 'house rules' to be aware of before booking, but given the history/age of the property, we happily accepted them in return for staying there. We loved going back to 'our house' at the end of each day after sightseeing and really relaxed there. The location was great for us, walking distance to the underground and bus stops, but thankfully not right bang in the middle of the main tourist areas. Lots of nice local authentic cafes, bars and restaurants nearby, which were not crowded with other tourists. We would love to return and stay longer next time.
We loved everything.
