Region: The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.
Town: The small village of Wombleton lies in Ryedale, on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. Three miles from both Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside, Wombleton still retains some farming heritage, with several working farms in the village. Recorded in the Domesday Book, the village consists of a mix of old, traditional stone cottages and newer housing. The village has an excellent pub, a medieval cruck framed building, serving good bar meals. Wombleton is ideally placed for walking, exploring the Yorkshire Coast and moors, visiting historic York and places of interest such as Castle Howard, Nunnington Hall and Rievaulx Abbey. The pretty market towns of Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside are nearby with good restaurants, tea rooms and individual shops. Ryedale Folk museum, Helmsley Castle and walled gardens are well worth a visit.
