Mingle Lekiu

Stunning hostel and amazing value for money. Spotless rooms, cozy chilling area by the reception, spotless and refreshing swimming pool, nice terrace to sit on, THE BEST coffee I've had on my trip. Super friendly staff too.

Lekiu is the best of a set of 3 similar Mingle establishments around KL; a city that I found surprisingly had pretty poor choice for budget hostels. Thankfully Mingle was always available. The staff were really welcoming, helpful, and added to the character of the place. I attended a pub quiz/crawl and it was well organised, with the volunteer guests making an effort and making it fun. Filter water was kept running at the sink area and there was a fridge for guests too, as well as a free barista-style coffee from the nearby Mingle/Timothy Cafe. Both beds I had were comfy, especially the double bed. Initially I was a bit peeved that bags were to be kept in lockers outside the dorm rooms, but it actually worked well in the end. Bring your own padlock!! The facilities are what made this place special, from the lovely swimming pool and decked area in the sun, to the pool table, and many areas to chill out. There is an adjoining restaurant too, where discount for guests is available.

The pricing. I had a bed advertised on booking.com for £7. But the final total to pay online after taxes was nearly £13! I am aware of the tourist fees and Government taxes, but that was waay higher than I'd paid in any other place. And booking in person was even more expensive. This needs an explanation really, being almost double the original price advertised! For this price too, I'd expect a simple breakfast. Sure a free coffee was provided and 20% off at the partner restaurant, but the menu was really pricey for backpacker standards (though I had dinner here and it was delicious and worth the price). Everything came at an additional cost, which felt a little like a business trying to squeeze their guests. Fair enough, but not the vibe I like after so much tax slapped on the bed price. They are cashless too. The showers, though working well, were a little dirty, with a smell of drains. Also they often didn't have warm water.
