History of the Cottage

Old Jewellers holds a unique connection to the Waldrum family and the history of Tayport. The name honours Thomas Waldrum, a watchmaker and jeweller born in 1866 who ran his business from this building until his death in 1930.

The original entrance to the jeweller’s shop was located between the two front lounge windows, where customers once entered to browse watches and jewellery. Thomas Waldrum’s workshop was situated within what is now the lounge area, which today provides a cosy space for guests to relax.

The Waldrum family lived next door at number 54, a space that now forms the front and rear bedrooms of the cottage. Although the property now operates solely under number 52, its history remains an important part of the building’s character.

Location

Tayport sits on the edge of the Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve and offers a relaxed coastal setting with easy access to surrounding towns and attractions.

Tentsmuir Forest and Beach are just a short drive away and provide miles of sandy shoreline along with walking and cycling routes through the forest. Wildlife is often spotted along the coast, including seals resting on the sandbanks.

Dundee is around a ten minute drive across the Tay Bridge and offers attractions including the V and A Dundee museum, the historic RRS Discovery and a lively waterfront area with cafés, restaurants and shops.

St Andrews is approximately twenty minutes away and is well known for golf, historic streets and wide sandy beaches.

Closer to home, Tayport Harbour and Marina provide a pleasant setting for a walk along the water with views across the River Tay towards Broughty Ferry. The nearby Fife Coastal Path also runs through Tayport, offering scenic walking and cycling routes along the coastline.

Local community facilities such as the Larick Centre, Tayport Tennis Club and Scotscraig Golf Club are all located within the town.
