We stayed at Titicaca Utjawi Lodge and had a very unique experience on Lake Titicaca. The lodge is located about 20 minutes by boat from the port of Puno, on Wilson’s own floating Uros island. We arrived late in the evening, but Wilson kindly waited for us and took us across the lake. The boat ride in the dark was an adventure in itself and a memorable start to our stay. The lodge is surprisingly spacious, with three double beds, a comfortable lounge area, a dining space, and several terraces on both sides where you can enjoy the views. Staying here means being right in the middle of daily life on the Uros floating islands, which is a fascinating cultural experience. One of the highlights of our stay was spending time with Wilson. He took us around in his boat and explained the daily life of the Uros people, how the floating islands are built from totora reeds, how they are maintained, and what materials and supplies are needed to sustain life on the lake. We really appreciated learning directly from someone who lives there. We also loved how close to nature everything felt—the peaceful surroundings, the water all around us, and the simple lifestyle made for a very special experience. Nelly prepared two dinners for us, both of which were delicious and freshly made. Breakfast was also very good, with scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, and bread. It is important to understand that staying here is about the experience rather than luxury. The eco-toilet takes some getting used to, the shower provides only a small stream of warm water, and the house can get very cold at night. There is a gas heater, which helps, but it is not enough to fully warm the space. Future guests should also keep in mind that everything requires a boat trip. Wilson kindly took us to a nearby restaurant, but if you need drinking water or other supplies, you will need to buy them from a shop on another island and arrange boat transport.
* The lodge can get very cold at night. Although there is a gas heater, it is not powerful enough to fully heat the space. * The eco-toilet takes some getting used to and may not be comfortable for everyone. * The shower water is warm, but the water pressure is very low. * The island is only accessible by boat, so you cannot easily leave whenever you want. * Drinking water and other supplies are not readily available on the island and require a boat trip to a nearby shop. * The bathroom only provides hand soap; shampoo, shower gel, and other toiletries are not supplied. * Due to the floating island environment, comfort levels are more basic than in a standard hotel. * There is little to do independently on the island without arranging boat transport.
