If you’ve always wanted to spend a vacation on a moored houseboat in a unique setting and experience a different lifestyle on the water, you now have the opportunity to do so in the most central and beautiful part of the enchanting Hanseatic city of Stade.
Located in the historic harbor of the Hanseatic city of Stade, the artist-designed houseboat named “Kunstkudder” offers a colorful contrast to the picturesque ensemble of harbor basins and half-timbered houses. The houseboat, which has a permanent berth at the quay wall next to the Schwedenspeicher Museum, captivates visitors with its rustic charm and tasteful interior design.
A footbridge leads to the houseboat. Two wooden staircases to the right and left of the entrance hatch lead up to the large rooftop terrace, which is equipped with two beach chairs and a railing and invites you to linger when the sun is shining brightly.
Below deck, you enter the “Kunstkudder” through the kitchen, which is equipped with everything you need for a relaxing vacation as a couple or with the family. Adjacent to it is the large, cozy living area. The sleeping berth at the rear of the boat sleeps two people. Up to two additional guests can sleep in the living area on the couch, which can be converted into a bed in just a few simple steps. A small hallway with a built-in closet leads to the cozy sleeping berth and to the bathroom, which is equipped with all the essentials.
Enjoy a break on the Stader Kunstkudder and, after a stroll through the beautiful old town or a canal boat ride, wind down the day comfortably on the sofa of your houseboat or on the rooftopterrace.
Note: Access to the boat is not wheelchair-accessible and is therefore not suitable for people with limited mobility.
Kunstkudder Houseboat in Stade’s Hansehafen:
The Kunstkudder is a houseboat that was converted into a modern vacation rental in 2024: In the summer of 2023, the oldest surviving Alster barge (built in 1904) made its way from Hamburg to Stade. The former barge, which is 18 meters long, has a flat bottom, and is non-self-propelled, was completely gutted and fitted with new interior furnishings. In addition, the barge was given a colorful exterior paint job by the Berlin-based artist collective 44flavours. In December 2023, in a spectacular operation, it was hoisted by crane from the city harbor into the neighboring harbor basin of the Hanseatic Port, where it has found its permanent berth next to the Schwedenspeicher Museum.
Since fall 2024, the Kunstkudder has been habitable for guests year-round and serves as overnight accommodations for an artist each September and October as part of an art residency.
Upon entering the Kunstkudder through the hatch, a staircase leads directly to the kitchen area. There you’ll find a radiator, a sink with running water, a double hot plate, a French press, a refrigerator, a toaster, and a retro-style electric kettle. The built-in cabinet and shelf contain pots, pans, dishes, and silverware. A bar cabinet with glasses completes the rustic look of this maritime vacation home and can be used to store bottles.
As you continue on, you’ll enter the large, cozy living room. There are two radiators here and four windows on each side of the room, all equipped with bamboo roller blinds for privacy and sun protection. On the left is a long couch that can easily be converted into a sleeping area at night. Removing the backrest reveals a sufficiently wide sleeping surface where two people can sleep one behind the other. For guests traveling as a couple who do not wish to use the sleeping berth in the rear section of the Kunstkudder or who prefer to sleep in separate rooms, we’ll be happy to set up these beds upon request. Furthermore, this room features a cozy armchair, a table with four comfortable chairs, a rug, a coffee table, colorful pillows, and a pouf.
Adjacent to the living area is a small hallway. Here you’ll find a coat rack and access to the sleeping berth, which is reached via a staircase. There are two large windows here, so you can look up at the sky from your bed.
The hallway also leads to the tastefully designed bathroom, which is equipped with a sink, a shower, and a toilet—everything you need for a pleasant start to the day or a relaxing end to the evening.
And to make sure the Kunstkudder’s key doesn’t get lost if it ever falls into the water, it’s guarded by a rubber duck that can swim. Using the provided landing net, both can then be brought back on board.
