    The Elysium Taksim proudly markets itself as a five-star hotel. After my stay, I’d say it’s more of a three-star hotel with five-star aspirations and a Fawlty Towers management training programme. I arrived with a confirmed king-bed reservation and was given a room with two single beds. After returning to reception, I was moved to another room which had no air conditioning. I was then informed that the entire floor had no air conditioning—a problem that, judging by other reviews, is hardly a rare occurrence and another guest was also at reception complaining about it Back to reception for a third time, where the permanently smiling Russian receptionist—let’s call him Basil Fawltocheski—offered me a deal: another twin-bed room for the night and a move to a king-bed room the next day, as originally booked. No apology, just a grin and a promise. The promise was never honoured. To be fair, the room décor itself was perfectly pleasant and generally what you’d expect from a decent hotel. Unfortunately, the designers added a unique feature: bathroom lights that couldn’t be switched off unless you cut power to the room, which also disabled the air conditioning. Apparently guests must choose between sleeping in a partially illuminated room or sleeping in a sweatbox. The location is also underwhelming, sitting down a hill in a concrete hollow surrounded by neighbouring buildings and construction sites. Hardly the premium setting one might expect from a property claiming five-star status. The staff smile a lot. Unfortunately, smiles don’t cool rooms, create king beds, keep promises or turn off lights. One star for providing accommodation. The second star is awarded purely for the unintended comedy and the reasonable pricing
