About this house rental
La Maison Malabar is a beautiful cabin in South Haven, Michigan, just north of downtown. It features 3 gorgeous bedrooms and 2 beautiful bathrooms. It was recently renovated by a couple from Poland who spent 6 years doing all of the intricate woodwork and renovations for the property. It has all modern amenities including air conditioning, WiFi, cable television, a dishwasher, and a washer and dryer. The cabin provides an incredible getaway for couples, small group, or families!
INTERACTION WITH GUESTS:
We have a local property manager in place who meets guests in person and is available to address any and all questions and/or issues.
NEIGHBORHOOD:
The surrounding neighborhood is an eclectic mix of a several different houses of various styles and sizes. (The neighborhood is not an organized subdivision.) The neighbors are very friendly. Some of the neighbors do have dogs (mainly to alert about the local wildlife) and the dogs may be outside (tied up or gated) and may bark at you (from a distance) during your stay.
The cabin is located in a beautiful woodsy and forested area only about 3 miles north of downtown South Haven. South Haven is perhaps the quintessential beach town in Michigan. It is located on Lake Michigan where the Black River flows into Lake Michigan. There are a vast array of shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars in the town as well as very nice beaches on Lake Michigan on both sides of the Black River (the South Beach and the North Beach). There is a lovely pier that leads out to the famous South Haven LIghthouse. The pier and beach make for a great sunset walks as the sun is setting on Lake Michigan!
If a more natural environment is desired, the Casco Township Natural Preserve is just 1.8 miles north of the cabin on Lake Michigan. It provides nice walking trails that have gorgeous overlooks of Lake Michigan.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The property is quite close to Lake Michigan, but it is separated from Lake Michigan by several extremely expensive lakefront houses. There is no public path between these houses to get to Lake Michigan. Please do not trespass on any of the neighbor's properties to access the lake. North Beach in South Haven is only 4.2 miles from the property. Please drive to North Beach or any of the other public beaches in the area to access Lake Michigan and its beaches.

Guests have access to the entire house and property.
THE SPACE:
The cabin has a wonderful international flair to it! The house was remodeled by a couple from Poland who spent 6 years working on the renovations and all of the detailed woodwork that is throughout the house. There is a lovely woods and nature theme that flows throughout the entire cabin. This includes a lot of beautiful hand-crafted woodwork. The name of the cabin, La Maison Malabar, is French for "The Malabar House" and the cabin is named after the Malabar Coast of India, where the current owners of the cabin are originally from.
TRANSIT:
It is highly recommended that guests have their own means of transportation.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
1) LAYOUT: The cabin has two beautiful bathrooms, but each one is an en suite bathroom (i.e. private bathroom attached to a bedroom). Thus, it is necessary to walk through one of the bedrooms (either Bedroom #2 or Bedroom #3) to get to one of the bathrooms.
2) STORAGE SPACE: At present, there is not a lot of storage space in the cabin in terms of closets and dressers, which could be an issue for larger groups and/or groups that are staying for longer periods.
3) FIREWOOD: We do not provide firewood.
4) LOCATION: The property is quite close to Lake Michigan, but it is separated from Lake Michigan by several extremely expensive lakefront houses. There is no public path between these houses to get to Lake Michigan. Please do not trespass on any of the neighbor's properties to access or view the lake. North Beach in South Haven is only 4.2 miles from the property. Please drive to North Beach or any of the other public beaches in the area to access Lake Michigan and its beaches.
5) PET POLICY: All pets are strictly prohibited at the property.
6) NUMBER OF GUESTS: Please note that our pricing is based upon the number of guests, with pricing being higher with each additional guest that is included on the reservation. Please make certain that the correct number of guests is specified on the reservation so that the pricing is correct.
7) EARLY CHECK-IN: Our policy is to allow early check-in on the day of arrival if the property is available for check-in. We will not know until the day before arrival whether or not the property will be available for early check-in or not. You can check with our local property manager the day before arrival or on your arrival day to see if the property will be available for early check-in or not.
8) LATE CHECK-OUT: We maintain a very strict and structured cleaning schedule. As such, late check-outs are strictly prohibited.

I stayed in the Fall, beautiful, quiet, setting for a relaxing getaway. Very quick drive to downtown area for activities as well as great hiking nearby.

We enjoyed your cabin in the woods. It was very clean and close to Lake Michigan and good restaurants. Despite the weather which was very windy and rainy, we had a very restful and peaceful time. Just what we needed! The lake’s waves were amazing.

This place COULD be everything it's advertised, but it isn't yet. There are some issues with layout, and the most important thing you need to realize is that this really isn't set up for 6 people, even though there are 3 bedrooms. The nicest bedroom has a rickety bedframe with an old, sagging mattress, and if you stay in that room, you have to walk through one of the other two bedrooms to reach a bathroom. There is no dedicated (or even convenient) bathroom for the 3rd bedroom. Storage is an issue for guests. We ended up with a laundry list of details that needed to be addressed, which we passed on when we left, that keep it from being luxury or even as advertised.
That being said, it's a nice property and could be really wonderful if some things are addressed to make it truly as advertised. Kristin is amazing; she was so helpful to us and was available every time we had a question. One of our cars broke down about a half mile after leaving the property, and she invited us back to the cabin to try to get help and worked with us to try to find a way to get home on a Sunday when everything was closed.
It's a beautiful property, but not secluded, an easy drive to South Haven to the beach and shopping/dining, and can work well for the right people, but pay close attention to the bedroom/bathroom situation (also not recommended for small children).
