The Shrubbery Hotel

Great location. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was perfect. There is a walled garden great for breakfast or drinks if the weather is good.

The bed was reasonably comfortable and the hotel is in the centre of the town.

This is a budget hotel and it looks tired, tatty, and a wee bit scruffy. Room furniture is dated, and there was a carpet in the bathroom. The property generally looks a little unloved. At £100 per night (without breakfast) it’s about the going rate even for a budget hotel in most places these days but there’s definitely better on offer reasonably near by. It was by no means the worst place I’ve ever stayed but it’s far from the best either. It did its job, in that it provided me with a bed, a very small tv, and tea making facilities. I suppose my disappointment was, I’d expected more from the publicity photos and the reviews I’d read online. Yes the building may be old but that shouldn’t excuse the lack of care or attention to detail. I live in a house 250 years plus so I understand the difference between quirky and scruffy.
