ANJIN Gion Shirakawa

This beautiful traditional Japanese townhouse gave us an authentic Kyoto experience. Waking up to the peaceful view of the Shirakawa River and the beautiful tree outside was incredibly relaxing. Just a few steps from the house is a charming little street lined with lovely shops, cafés and restaurants, making it the perfect location to explore Gion on foot. One of our favourite things was being able to paddle in the shallow river just outside the house. It was such a lovely way to cool down on a very hot day and made our stay feel even more special. If you're looking for a peaceful stay full of traditional Japanese charm, this is a wonderful choice.

Beautiful traditional Ryokan in front of the river. Very calm area. They bring a Japanese breakfast in the morning. Perfect if you want to have a more local experience.

The location was very convenient, and we really liked the traditional style of the building. The second-floor tatami room was especially nice, with a traditional Japanese atmosphere and a comfortable space to relax. The bathroom was functional. Overall, these were some of the best aspects of our stay and gave us a nice experience of staying in a traditional Japanese-style accommodation.

There was quite a lot of dust, especially in the tatami room. There was also an unpleasant smell at the entrance on the first floor, apparently coming from garbage bags stored in the metal box next to the entrance door, possibly left by previous guests. The kitchen area was very narrow, with limited space for preparing coffee or other drinks. The tatami room facing the street also had poor sound insulation, which was particularly noticeable at night when people walked past outside. Overall, the location and traditional tatami room were nice, but the cleanliness, smell, limited kitchen space, and street noise made the stay less comfortable than expected.
