We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Loved walking the paths around the lake and the village. The sound of cowbells and mountain views were wonderful! The apartment is definitely not as new and spacious as it appears in the photos, but was still more than adequate. Host is super nice, - we would stay here again.

We had a fabulous stay. The apartment was perfect for our family of 4. Comfortable beds and a good shower. A few restaurants and playgrounds within walking distance. The view of the castles from the deck was so much better than I expected. Wish we had more time here.

We booked this place because you can see the castle out the window. The apartment itself was great, although looking at the listing it shows photos of all three apartments so it was difficult to identify exactly which one we would be staying in. It didn’t really matter because we were there to see the castles! The key pick up wasn’t super easy, you have to go to a totally different town in the opposite direction from Fussen or Horn-Schwangau where the apartment is. I would suggest getting code locks on the doors so guests can bypass having to go out of the way to pick them up. The owner was great to communicate with but the property manager was spotty in responses. The apartment is a bit remote, with really not a lot of shops etc right around it. The closest bus stop was over 1km away, which would have been okay if we didn’t have only 75 year old mother in tow. It was even further to walk the closest grocery store. I would definitely recommend a car if you are going to stay here if anyone in your group has mobility issues. We did go to the thermal baths across the field on eafternoon and that was lovely, just note, clothing is optional in certain areas so keep that in mind so you aren’t shocked. Final note, the washing machine is not in the apartment, it’s downstairs in the basement, wonderful to have access to but there wasn’t clear details on where it was located so we had to do some investigating to locate it ourselves. Overall, beautiful beautiful location but just a bit more remote than we were expecting.

This was a clean, comfortable property with more room than expected and a great view.

We LOVED the view from the balcony. Seeing the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles, along with the sunsets and thunderstorms behind the mountains was an unmatched experience.
The location was incredibly walkable/bikeable for getting around. Less than 2 miles for anything you need, including some great restaurants and breweries, and you can ride bicycles or ebikes very easily almost everywhere.
The area as a whole is quiet and peaceful. The unit itself is clean, roomy and has almost anything you’d need in an apartment. There was some basic damage when we got there (broken window shade, drywall chipped on a column, etc.), all normal stuff.
Silke, the owner is very sweet and will try to do whatever it takes to make things work.
Our single largest issue was not knowing a lot of the basics up front, ALL OF WHICH could easily be incorporated into the VRBO page.
We are strong advocates for knowing as much as possible up front when we book a place. Hidden fees (not clearly shown at time of booking), can be stressful and in many cases onerous. The short stay fee of 120€ for less than 4 days is located in "House Rules" (not in Additional information about rental rates”), is written in German and requires one to click on "See More". In fact, it is the ONLY part of this particular VRBO location site that does NOT translate. So if you don't speak German, you have to have it translated for you.
The guest fee and hygiene fees weren't mentioned either, and none of the three additional fees were mentioned at check out. ALL the hidden fees (145,5€, representing an approximate 33% increase in the rental) were required to be paid in cash.
The refrigerator turned OFF, not even on low, even though they knew we were coming.
Surprisingly, hand soap was not provided.
Getting on the internet was a fiasco. There were two different networks and we had to move near the front door to access the router which was one floor below. The WIFI was worse than our phone data, so we turned it off.
While there to collect the cash, it was uncomfortably obvious the property manager was casing the apartment to see how we were living in it. The property manager also asked us to shut windows if it's raining. but there is no air conditioning, although in the amenities it says there IS air conditioning. However, that wasn’t an issue when there was a nice breeze.
It also says there’s a dryer, but we couldn’t find one. We did find a drying rack.

Absolutely loved our stay. It was perfect location just outside of the town but close enough for all adventures. Will definitely be back!

Every aspect of renting this property was smooth and simple. My husband and I enjoyed a week here in May and we loved the location and setup. We stayed on the top level which had many skylights in every room for beautiful natural lighting every day (even on the rainy snowy days we did not feel like it was dark and gloomy inside!) the view off the balcony was breath taking. We loved being in the peaceful neighborhood...far enough from the daily traffic down in the village but close enough to walk to it and explore. Supermarkets were wonderful and easy to use with everything we needed. Even though there were people in the other floors of the house, we rarely saw them or crossed paths because of the way the entrances are setup. It felt very private like we had the whole place to ourselves. The welcome booklet they provided in English was very helpful with all the info we needed about the area. I especially loved waking up and watching the sun rise over the mountains and seeing the beautiful views of the castles and village straight ahead.

Everyone in our family agrees we'd love to come back to the Birkeneck! It is the perfect place from which to base your Bavarian adventure- excellent location, immaculate and comfortable apartment plus Cornelia's detailed knowledge of the area to assist you.
The garden was great for our kids to run around in when we weren't out cycling around the beautiful green lanes. Everything in the kitchen was in perfect working order and the bathroom was spotless. Laundry facilities in the basement meant we could travel light.
We couldn't have asked for a better week of weather in which to be out exploring the villages, castle, lakes and nature trails. Kids loved running around listening to the neighbouring cows' bells ringing and the tree walk.
We're hoping to come back to experience Birkeneck in the snow!
Thank you Silke, you've created a perfect haven in which to relax!

The appartment at Birkeneck house in Schwangau was a very good choice for us to spend our vacation in Bavaria. A very nice, clean, peacefull and well connected (for those with car, bicycle or on foot) area with planty of options for rest and activities, direct view at mountains and the famous castles, clean, confortable, fully equiped appartment itself, discreet and nice hospitality from the host with a very good information on what is there at the very start - nothing more is needed if we just want to relax and share our joy with our family. We thank you for the opportunity to experience the two weeks visit at Birkeneck house as a base for our vacation.

dear Silke, would recommend the appartment highly. the views were incredible from all windows; but the view from the living area was breathtaking. had a wonderful week in Schwangau, loved the opera house, bit dissapointed at how short the tour was of the castles..... but we had a seven day view... so hey-ho!!!! lovely eating houses for lunch times. the tourist office staff were extemely friendly.... as was everyone that we spoke to...... but none moreso than yor neighbour; an axtremely pleasant person who was so helpful to both my husband and myself. a big thankyou to her again. so many beautiful walks. lucky enough to visit st. mangs monastery during a musical recital. just loved everything about the appartment.. and thankyou for allowing us to stay. love from sallie-anne xx

We enjoyed our stay with you enormously and will return in 2011 if all goes well. Your "luxury apartment" is unique and is a credit to you for all your planning and attention to detail to satisfy the most difficult traveller. Louise and I have always been individual travellers and are quite fussy about where we stay. In 33 years as individual travellers to 5 continents we have never stayed in an apartment as good as yours. You have fitted it out brilliantly with every modern convenience travellers could wish for to make them feel that they are at home. We loved the space , the comfort , and the light ------ nothing is cramped. The view of course is unique , and to see Ludwig's Castle through the morning mists and lit up at night is a scene that you never get tired of checking just to make certain it is still there. You have covered the "little things" that a traveller cherishes---plenty of wardrobe and hanger space and an abundance of coathangers.
You have created an oasis of peace and tranquility surrounded by a multitude of things to do and places to go that most travellers never see or have the chance to find. Classic walks, Mountains to climb or to ride the Finicular to the top, views so good that even a camera cannot do justice to them , lakes to canoe on or swim in and excellent restaurants that offer both a variety of international and local cuisine . You are surrounded by History and although many people come to Fussen/Schwangau we never felt crowded or confined. Travellers after a long day seeing the sights sometimes don't wish to cook themselves an evening meal nor do they wish to have to travel far to find a restaurant. You are fortunate to have Hotel Steiger only 150 metres away which has an excellent table and wine list and where you can see Fussen Castle and snow capped mountains from the dining room.
I can't speak highly enough of your property and of your help . We will return soon

Birkeneck Luxury Holiday Apartment far exceeded our expectations. Located in the lovely village of Schwangau, the apartment is a true gem in a great location, close to many outdoor activities, including: mountain walks; cycling; hand gliding; white water rafting; canoeing etc. The upper floor apartment, recently converted using local materials is finished to a very high standard and you will not be disappointed with the quality fit-out. The views of the mountains and Neuschwanstien castle are a real bonus. The owners are very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble for them in making your stay comfortable. They speak German and English, have excellent local knowledge and are keen to share their experiences and recommend everything from restaurants to the best mountain walks.
With so much to see and do in the local area this is a really is a hidden gem of an apartment in one of Europes best kept secrets of a location.
We are returning again this summer - our first repeat holiday ever.

We really enjoyed our stay at Birkeneck Luxury Apartment. It was a nice drive from Frankfurt and once we got there it was a fabulous getaway from the city life. You can arrive without knowing anything about the area and Silke and Kalim will give you all of the information you need. They had made dinner reservations for us for our first night and the restaurant was really great and just a short walk from the hotel. We weren’t really sure what we wanted to do on our trip, but we let our hosts know what types of things we enjoyed and they provided us with so many options and detailed information about the area. The apartment itself was really beautiful; modern and open, and cozy at the same time. The small town of Schwangau is charming and we actually found it easier to communicate in English there than almost any other city we have visited in Germany so far. Everyone seems like they really want you to have a great stay. We got to experience so much in our 4 nights there, but we were also left wanting more. We will definitely be coming back.

What a fantastic family holiday! All the ingredients for what my family loves. Great winter sports, great natural beauty all around and so accessible from Munich. We were absolutely thrilled with the Mountain top chalets the fairy tale castles and the friendly people in general. The flat (Birkeneck Holiday Apartment) was very attractive, extremely modern, comfortable and private – it’s impecably maintained and cosy with all the mod cons we needed. There are plenty of fabulous places to eat within close walking distance but it is also good to be able to have a simple home meal when we were tired out from days outdoors or on the slopes. Our hosts were charming and interesting and very helpful with suggestions of what we might enjoy and how to get there. Importantly for us, though they got the balance right with being there to help but letting us enjoy our privacy. Highlights: The kids ski-ing lessons, watching the reindeer at feeding time and the simply marvellous food and hospitality to be had all around. We really didn’t stay long enough to do the area justice and we will definitely be back! Thanks Silke and Kalim – and be careful, that massage chair would have left on the plane with us if it had fit in a suitcase – my husband fell in love with it!
